Coalition commits $5 million to secure houses and fix hazardous road blackspot

One of the most dangerous local road blackspots on the North Coast will be fixed if the Federal Coalition is elected, Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker said today.
Mr Hartsuyker announced today a Federal Coalition Government would invest $5 million in stabilising a section of Riverside Drive Nambucca Heads where houses are under threat and the road is a public health risk.
Mr Hartsuyker said the section of road between the Nambucca Heads Tourist Information Centre and the northern entrance to Woodbell Street has shown signs of tremendous instability.
“This road project needs to be completed because of motorist safety and the potential for damage to private property,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“Independent engineers have undertaken a geotechnical assessment of the road itself plus the adjacent embankments.
“They have advised council the bulk of this section of road was given a hazard rating of ‘possible failure’, with large sections rated as ‘likely to fail’ and one section as ‘almost certain to fail’.
“The upslope embankments are also unstable and lined with private dwellings. Sections slip on a regular basis in reasonably heavy rainfall events.
“The road carries traffic in excess of 6,000 vehicles per day.
“The Coalition understands the Nambucca Shire Council simply does not have the financial resources to address this problem as a single works project.
“Their only option is to address small sections in order of risk over many, many years. Resuming private property is not a feasible option based on cost.
“A $5 million investment will enable stabilisation of the upslope slips and the reconstruction of the worst section of road around the tidal flats.
I look forward to continuing to work with the Nambucca Shire Council to deliver better outcomes for the local community.”
