An elected Liberal-National Government would provide up to $125,000 to support local efforts to rehabilitate the Condamine Catchment.

Mr Scott said if a Coalition Government was elected, the Condamine Green Army project would be one of the first to benefit from funding, with the project being undertaken in partnership with the Condamine Alliance to assist the organisation with its highly successful long-term Condamine River Rescue Program.

“A local Green Army deployment will be able to help the Condamine Alliance rehabilitate the Condamine Catchment, undertaking activities such as weed control, resnagging, destocking of river carp and planting trees for koalas,” Mr Scott said.

“The Green Army is a practical policy that will deliver real outcomes. It will build on the success of the former Coalition Government’s popular Green Corps program by providing more locals with the opportunity to overcome employment barriers, make a positive contribution to the community, and think about pursuing a career in environmental management,” he said.

The Green Army is an employment and training program that will create an environmental workforce to target our most degraded areas and assist the existing work currently being carried out by local Landcare volunteers.

Mr Scott said the Green Army would provide teams of ten young Australians who will work on local community-based environmental projects for six month periods as part of a new Coalition program.

“This is a very positive initiative that will deliver significant training and practical experience in the vital area of environmental management, and I am delighted that we have secured one of the first Green Army projects for Maranoa. This is about jobs and training for ten young people and about creating an environmental benefit for all locals,” he said.

Under a Coalition Government, the scheme would start in July 2011.
