Independent Gerry Georgatos (WA) – 100,000 houses will eliminate homelessness and we must also raise income thresholds for those living in public/state housing.

14,000 West Australians sleep on the streets. 110,000 Australians sleep on the streets. If the Government built 100,000 homes for people in need the majority of homelessness shall immediately cease. It is affordable however it shall be determined by the will to ensure the building of such homes in the budget. 23,000 families in Western Australia have applied for public housing. Australia needs to urgently build 200,000 public houses to alleviate the waiting times for such housing.

Certain government housing requires citizens to only be allowed to occupy a home on a relatively low government rent on the premise they earn below a certain amount of income. Once they earn above a certain amount they must move out. This is wrong and needs to be revisited by a Public Inquiry. If people are moved out of their low rent government homes once they get a little bit ahead then they are back to square one, crushed once again for a period of time or altogether, if they have to move into expensive private rentals. The income thresholds have to be raised so as to encourage people to advance themselves and to secure this advancement.

In some European countries, including the United Kingdom, certain government housing, known in some parts as Council houses, are deemed to people for life, and if they cannot afford to pay any rent, such as when unemployed, they are not required to pay rent. Australia needs a Public Inquiry so as to improve the social underwriting of society rather than trap people within the welfare state that claims to protect them from abject poverty.
