Oakeshott happy to head back to polls

I kind of hope that we do go back to the polls. I know that it would make David happy.

I would be interested to see if the swing towards the Greens would gain momentum now that people have seen that voting outside of the big two actually makes a difference.

I think it’s quite possible that if a new election were called due to a hung parliament, the Greens would lose votes as stupid people would vote for one of the majors, in ignorance of the way preferences actually work. Melbourne and Grayndler might be exceptions to that, where it is being explicitly demonstrated how BS the two party narrative is. This kind of “must vote for one of the majors” mentality was demonstrated in all its absurdity in the SA upper house election, where a bunch of people voted for the party they wanted to win government, in ignorance of preferences. And, y’know, the freakin’ Westminster system.

If someone does manage to form minority government, and we get most of a full term out of them, I’d consider the Greens’ fortunes likely to improve considerably, particularly if it’s a Gillard govt. and Bandt has an opportunity to shine.

As much as I’d love another election, I’m not sure I could spare the time for another one.

I’m almost glad this one is over so I can have my evenings back for a while.

    (Until the Victorian election…)

  • A second election too soon would probably see a drop in minor-party support across the board. Voters would swing back to the majors in an attempt to “get them over the line” and avoid another minority government or hung parliament situation.

I think the Greens would consolidate their gains and would potentially pick up Grayndler, Sydney, Brisbane and possibly Denison if there were another election held shortly.

I agree with you that people may swing back to the majors, but only from micro-parties like the Democrats, the Sex Party, the LDP, etc.

The Greens are going to take a shitload of momentum out of this election.
