Sydney Resistance Centre moves to Ultimo

The Sydney Resistance Centre – a decades-long radical institution and home to Green Left Weekly newspaper, the Socialist Alliance, the youth organisation Resistance, and a radical bookshop – has moved from its old Chippendale premises, and into the modern Fusion building at 22-36 Mountain Street, Ultimo.

Activists including independent journalist Antony Loewenstein, NSW Greens MP David Shoebridge, Socialist Alliance national convenor Peter Boyle and many others including Aboriginal justice, refugee rights, and civil liberties campaigners, will toast the new activist centre at the grand opening this Saturday, July 16, from 4pm.

Joining them will be international solidarity activists including Lek Jimdaratana, a leader of Thai Red Australia, an activist from the Latin American Social Forum, and a Spanish “indignado” who has been part of the anti-neoliberal protests rocking Europe who will give greetings to the event via electronic hookup.

Accompanying the welcoming toasts to the new centre will be entertainment including a West Papuan dance act and the Freedom Fighters band, plus delicious food and drinks that will be available throughout the event.

“The new Resistance Centre promises to be a base of organising for many social justice and environmental issues, from solidarity with refugees, to stopping Coal Seam Gas mining in Sydney, to supporting Wikileaks,” commented Sydney Socialist Alliance convenor Paul Benedek. “It will also be a hub of alternative media, helping to produce Australia’s leading progressive weekly newspaper Green Left, along with being a a source of radical books, tshirts and badges. Ultimately, it seeks to be a base for all those who want to help change the world to one which puts people and the planet before profit. We encourage people to come along, check us out, and get involved!”
