Family First – 1 POKIE TO EVERY 25 ADULTS IN ANDAMOOKA? NOT ON OUR WATCH

1 POKIE TO EVERY 25 ADULTS IN
ANDAMOOKA? NOT ON OUR WATCH
Thursday 4 August 2011
FAMILY FIRST MLC Robert Brokenshire has voiced his Party‟s active support for
Andamooka Progress and Opal Miners Association‟s bid to reject an application by a
local licensee to install 20 machines in a town with an adult population estimated to
be 450 residents – roughly 1 machine for every 25 residents.
“This is ridiculous when there are pokie opportunities 20 minutes down the road at
Roxby Downs”, former Gambling Minister Brokenshire said, “and the town prides
itself on being pokie-free. I understand that so far 70 of those 450 adults have filed
Objections so far, with the hearing date on 29 August it could be a lot more”
“The local community have spoken and Family First is there with the community
helping with this case and seeking to defeat this ridiculous move”
Mr Brokenshire pointed to recent SA Centre for Economic Studies data showing that
in the over-arching local government area „Unincorporated, Far North and Far West
Coast‟ within which Andamooka falls, data showed Net Gaming Revenue per adult
was $903 each per annum, ranking 6
th
highest out of 43 local government areas in
South Australia and 50% above the average of $611 per person, per annum
statewide.
“Whilst this data includes other Far North and Far West areas, it shows in those
remote communities there is already a significant pokie problem – and the nearest
help services are 375km away in Port Pirie”
“If Andamooka residents have a concern they should lodge objections and if possible
get along Monday 29 August at 9am at the Office of Liquor and Gaming on Grenfell
Street Adelaide to show their support in numbers”
