Sex Party Takes Over Mt Isa Marriage Equality Rally Outside Bob Katter’s Office
The Sex Party has swooped in to save the Mount Isa Marriage Equality rally, after red tape and homophobia threatened to derail the event. The rally, now under the auspices of the Australian Sex Party, will go ahead on September 11th, at 11am, opposite Bob Katter’s electoral office.
This will be Australia’s first Equal Love Rally in an isolated rural city in Australia and party President Fiona Patten says it may be the first of many that the Sex Party conducts deep inside National Party and Katter territory.
The Sex Party believes firmly in the rights of all Australian citizens to have access to marriage, regardless of their sexuality.
The marriage equality movement has met with much success recently but up in North Queensland, they’re yet to feel the love. Bob Katter has been doing his best to remind his gay constituents that, even if he now believes they exist, they’re certainly not welcome, while Barnaby Joyce somehow believes that allowing same-sex marriage will deprive him of his rights!
Mount Isa resident and Sex Party member, James Newburrie, had finally had enough of the ‘tough love’ attitudes and decided to stand up and show Katter and the Nationals that Mt Isa residents, like the rest of the country, supported same-sex marriage. Unfortunately, his efforts were stymied when the Mount Isa Council refused to process his application for a ‘peaceful assembly’ unless he could obtain public liability insurance.
The Australian Sex Party had been following the preparations for the rally on Facebook and Twitter and made contact with the Mr Newberrie over the weekend to offer support. Barring further issues with the local council, the marriage equality rally will proceed, across the road from Bob Katter’s office, under the auspices of the Australian Sex Party.
Bob Katter’s son, Councillor Robbie Katter, is on the local Mt Isa council.
Mr Newberrie said it was his hope that the rally would show the 11% of teens who are same-sex attracted in the Mt Isa area, that they were not alone and that attitudes in their community can change.
Ms Patten said that Mr Katter’s Party would be standing candidates in the Mt Isa electorate at the coming Qld state election and she was interested in hearing from people who wanted to stand against him for the Sex Party.
