Katter’s Australian Party – application for injunction to halt printing of ballot papers

Katter’s Australian Party application for injunction to halt printing of ballot papers

Katter’s Australian Party today made an application to the Supreme Court of Queensland for an injunction to stop the printing and distribution of ballot papers for the Queensland election.

This is in response to the refusal by the Electoral Commissioner of Queensland to allow the Party’s registered name, Katter’s Australian Party (Qld Division) to be printed on the ballot papers.

Instead the Commissioner has determined that only the Party’s registered abbreviation, The Australian Party, can be used on the ballot papers.

It is the view of the Party that Katter’s Australian Party (Qld Division), being the registered name of the Party, should not be prohibited from appearing on the ballot paper.

Out of respect for the court and the court process the Party will not be making any further formal comments about the action until it has been determined.

    So here’s a timeline :

Katter’s Australian Party applies for federal registration with the abbreviation “The Australian Party.
Katter’s Australian Party registration refused because the abbreviation is found to have breached the Electoral Act.
Katter’s Australian Party registers federally without abbreviation.
Katter’s Australian Party registers in Queensland without abbreviation.
Katter’s Australian Party applies for an amendment with the Electoral Commission of Queensland to include their previously disallowed federal abbreviation and are successful.
Electoral Commission of Queensland prints ballots with “The Australian Party” instead of “Katter’s Australian Party (Qld Division)” and they take the ECQ to court for not using the correct term.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

What do you want, Katter? Do you want to use your own name brand to increase awareness and votes for your candidates, or do you want to use the jingoistic brand to increase your candidates’ votes with lower engagement voters? Can’t have it both ways.

This is lolarious any way you look at it.

A more simple version goes like this :

“We want you to call us this.”
    “Stop calling us that!”
