Secular Party – A new future Australian Head of State

Media Release: Secular Party of Australia

A new future Australian Head of State

A new royal baby is on the way, it has been announced by the palace. A future king or queen. An occasion for congratulations from Prime Ministers and a media frenzy of news stories about the happy royal
couple, no doubt. Good luck and best wishes to them.

Amidst all the sycophantic adulation however, there is another aspect which is overlooked: unless something changes, the new baby will one day be the Australian Head of State. Rather than choosing our own, our Heads of State are created by an act of British royal copulation. It that what we really want?

The concept of a hereditary Head of State does not make any more sense than a hereditary carpenter, doctor, lawyer or politician. A new baby is very nice, but bring on the Republic please.

New Pandora app woos Android tablets as Apple radio grows The top online radio company rolls out a new version of its Android app designed specifically for tablets, tweaking it for bigger screens with more functions. by Joan E. Solsman October 30, 2013 5:30 AM PDT Follow @@joan_e

Pandora is getting friendlier with Android tablet users on the heels of now-rival Apple touting the traction of iTunes Radio. pandora outlet stores
Pandora, the Internet’s biggest radio service, on Wednesday rolled out a new version of its
Android app designed specifically for
tablets . The interface takes advantage of bigger screens and has upgraded functions, like the ability to add variety to a station and view more details about the artist and album. pandora jewelry outlet
Many of the features mimic what the company’s dedicated
iPad app can do. When it launched the iPad version, Pandora said it was planning an Android tablet app for the fall.

Justin Timberlake blesses iTunes Radio; Pandora should worry
pandora sale Android’s domination of the tablet market is quickly on its way to join the Google OS’ command of the smartphone realm. After Apple introduced the iPad in 2010, it sold more than three quarters of all tablets by the end of that year , according to IDC. By the end of last year, that share dropped below half and by the end of this year, Android should make up about 60 percent of all tablets in the market, according to IDC’s estimates. pandora silver
(Android has accumulated 80 percent of the world’s smartphone share at IDC’s last count.)
discount pandora charms
So it makes sense that Pandora would want to cozy up to Android tablet users.
Pandora has long credited its early presence on iPhones and iPads as a key reason it broke away from the pack as the leader in online radio. But Apple became a competitor in addition to being a partner in September with the launch of iTunes Radio, its own long-awaited radio service.
Last week, Apple revealed that iTunes Radio has reached 20 million users listening in to a billion songs. That follows the company netting more than 11 million unique listeners in the service’s first five days. Pandora has about 72.7 million monthly active listeners.
As data about iTunes Radio has emerged, some analysts have crunched the numbers to conclude the negative impact on Pandora has been minimal. A B. Riley analyst determined that iTunes Radio listeners spend 75 percent less time on service than listeners of Pandora, and a Canaccord survey found almost all respondents who had tried iTunes Radio said they still use Pandora: 92 percent.
The clearest picture yet of iTunes Radio’s effect on Pandora will come early next month when Pandora releases its monthly listener metrics. The numbers for October will be the first month that iTunes and Pandora have coexisted the entire time. Topics: Music , Media Tags: Pandora , iTunes Radio , Apple Joan E. Solsman Joan E. TNA Wrestling launches new 24/7 programming initiative

cartier TNA announced a pretty drastic change to the way it will present its product via a press release Thursday.
comprar Cartier Replica The company, which has seen a steady decline in television ratings and live event attendance, announced that it launched a new 24-hour programming initiative called, “Where Action Never Ends.”
relógios Cartier para venda According to the release, the company will give fans a glimpse at the wrestler’s lives in and out of the ring 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The fans will get to see storylines unfold at all times of the day and get an inside look at their favorite stars.
Cartier Replica Watch Shop This new Big Brother-esque format will be shown on TNA’s web site and the promotion’s various social media platforms and will give it a chance to move in a more creative direction with its characters and storylines.
Falso Cartier Mens Relógios Also announced in the release that the main hub for all of this programming will be Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla. and that tapings of Impact will return to Orlando.
réplicas de relógios The first episode of Impact from Orlando is scheduled to air live Nov. 21.
“The way that people view television has dramatically shifted, and it is incumbent upon us to deliver a modern, revolutionized way of watching professional wrestling to our fans,” TNA president Dixie Carter said in the release. “Our reality is that we only have 82 minutes of programming each week and a large roster of talented professionals that deserve more exposure. With our new ‘Where Action Never Ends’ creative direction, we will deliver just that for both them and the fans.”
“Bringing live events to our fans across the globe will remain a vital element of TNA’s business; however, our renewed focus, as it relates to our television programming, will shift from live event touring to 24/7 show content, so that our fans can really get to know our talent. And, in making Orlando’s Universal Studios our programming hub, we have the powerful combination of state-of-the-art production facilities and incredible soundstages that will make it easier for us to launch this new production-intensive initiative. We will also be working with Universal to develop new and creative ways to park guests and fans from around the world to experience a unique TNA attraction.”
The biggest thing of note from the second quote was that it sounded like TNA seems to be doing away touring around the country.
According to Mike Johnson PWInsider.com , those within TNA believe the promotion will pick up its live event touring after it wraps up its European Tour in the beginning of next year.
Johnson also reports that TNA hasn’t exactly pinned down which soundstage it will be using at Universal Studios, but it will not be returning to Soundstage 21, which was the home to the Impact Zone for years.

Hong Kong: From the Ritz to the Y   Bustling international metropolis has something to offer everyone from big spenders to frugal travellers

, AFP/Getty Images tiffany Festivities and fireworks are part of Hong Kong’s identity, but to me, the city is a perpetual party, popping yearround with lights and commerce and energy. The approximately 400,000 Canadians who visit this year will experience an intriguing mix of East and West, all flourishing in a delicate balance of upper-crust elegance and frenzied neon-lit street life.tiffany jewelry Hong Kong always has been my favourite city, even before I ever saw it. The name is loaded with music and mystique. The place brings to my mind images of a glamorous and worldly past of rickshaws and Rolls-Royces, and a pulp history rife with international spies, opium smugglers and painted women with rare talents. With eight million people, the Hong Kong of today embraces enough skyscrapers of astounding architecture to dwarf Toronto and even Manhattan, as well as the world’s largest container port and one of the busiest airports. It’s also an enormously entertaining destination on any budget.tiffany silver The city has more than 60 Michelinstarred restaurants and is home to some of the world’s most luxe hotels, including the revered Peninsula Hong Kong and the new and astounding Ritz-Carlton. Fashionistas line up outside Chanel and Prada, and Cartier and Rolex boutiques proliferate by the dozen.replica tiffany But that’s just one side of the modern metropolis. Bargain hunters, too, can enjoy this intimate city of distinct neighbourhoods that you can walk, touch and feel. Here is a peek at Hong Kong, two ways.tiffany silver The luxury route Stay: Big spenders will feel right at home at the plush Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, the highest-elevation hotel in the world, capping the shimmering, tapered glass tower of the International Commerce Centre. Rates start at $900 for a ritzy room for two, which includes the astonishing experience of swimming on the 118th floor, a halfkilometre in the sky. You could easily drop another $1,000 per day, living the high life at Ritz-Carlton with dinner at a one of the hotel’s restaurants, sightseeing via limousine, a restorative massage at ESPA and lychee cocktails at the penthouse lounge Ozone.replica tiffany Eat: The new culinary darling is Above & Beyond in Hotel Icon, which has panoramic views, an airy design by Sir Terence Conran and contemporary riffs on Cantonese cuisine. Delicacies include wagyu beef, abalone with fish maw, lobster with black truffles, barbecued goose, king prawns, foie gras with pineapple and tender smoked Bresse pigeon with oolong tea leaves.Restaurant manager Hugo Cheng brings expertise from Joël Robuchon’s empire and executive chef Joseph Tse from Mandarin Oriental. A gastronomic dinner costs $85 and up, plus wine pairings. The twist is that Hotel Icon is run by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Hotel Tourism Management, so you are taken care of by the best and brightest servers, both professional and interns.Shop: The city’s Tatler magazine is 400 pages thick with glossy ads for big-brand cars, jewels and watches. (The hottest timepiece is the Swiss-Italian Panerai, which runs $8,000-$25,000 for most models.)The swish Lane Crawford department store carries high-end French, Italian and American designers. But why not go all-Chinese with good-luck symbols, mandarin collars and calligraphy designs from Hong Kong companies? The chic lifestyle boutique Shanghai Tang carries luxurious cashmere, leather and silk clothes for men and women (figure on $700-1,000 for a dress or a man’s jacket) and home accessories, all with Chinese detailing. Goods of Desire on Hollywood Road is a hipster haven of local creations, such as weekend sweaters and down vests at $100-200 and loft-worthy decor items. Chinese Arts and Crafts has a three-storey collection of treasures, from a slinky $200 cheongsam to a $200,000 museum-quality porcelain vase.Wan Chai, the former red-light district immortalized in the 1960 movie The World of Suzie Wong, is Hong Kong’s upscale “it” neighbourhood, with office towers and condos sprouting like bamboo trees and international indulgences such as l’Occitane Spa from France and The Pawn, a gorgeous, historic colonial-style lounge and dining spot with a regal British accent. Wan Chai’s Star Street is a cluster of hot indie boutiques and Queen’s Road East is a posh decorators’ row with fine Asian fabrics. Spa: The sublime Chinese Wellness Ritual at the Four Seasons Hotel Spa begins with an ancient tea ceremony and segues into a soothing rice poultice application, a bracing body exfoliation, a warm rain shower and a revitalizing massage, all done with essences of ginseng, jasmine and green tea. It’s a steep $460, but you’ll feel like a million.Nature: It’s easy to forget that Hong Kong, the Fragrant Lagoon, is surrounded by tranquil islands, picturesque mountains and the warm waters of the South China Sea. No one does a high-flying trip to the seaside like The Peninsula Hotel, the colonial-era doyenne of Hong Kong hotels, where a stunning $57-million renovation is adding subtle high-tech touches and a warm residential style to spacious rooms. The Peninsula runs a twin-engined copter for aerial tours (around $3,000 for four people) of the Hong Kong Geopark, a UNESCO site of unique rock formations near Sai Kung in the New Territories. Geo-tourism is a new gig for Hong Kong and visitors can explore mangrove forests, sea corals and walled villages, built centuries ago as protection against pirates.Tea: East meets West at The Peninsula’s legendary afternoon tea served in the splendid neo-Classical lobby. Scones are topped with Devon cream, and Chinese chrysanthemum tea is served on fine bespoke porcelain by Tiffany & Co.On a budget Stay: Hong Kong has more budgetconscious options than one would think possible. Old China hands know about The Salisbury YMCA, arguably the world’s most desirable YMCA hotel. It’s across the street from the iconic Star Ferry, which still runs for 40 cents a ride after more than 100 years, and next door to the landmark Peninsula, so the same dazzling harbour view at a fraction of the cost. Rooms start at about $130 for two and include daily housekeeping and a fitness centre with two large indoor swimming pools and a hot tub. The young and cool stay at Hotel de Edge in the trendy, gentrified waterfront district of Sheung Wan, adjacent to Central. It’s an amazingly affordable 90-room newbie with a boutique style, molecular cuisine and a slew of design awards. Rates start at $120 for a compact, well-thought-out spaceEat: Cheap eats take on new meaning in the wild world of Cantonese cuisine. Michelin has sprinkled one precious star on 44 “authentic” eateries, where you can feast for as little as $10 in simple surroundings. You can pop into a storefront restaurant for egg tarts, roast goose, noodle dishes, dim sum, milk tea or rice congee and rarely spend more than $10. Snake soup and hot pot will warm you up in winter. Shing Kee in Central is one of the last dai pai dongs, steamy street cafés where you can fuel up on rice topped with tripe, pork, ox tongue or beef for $5 a bowl. Tim Ho Wan in Mong Kok, with one Michelin star, has basic laminate tabletops and tissue boxes for napkins, but its dim sum is so celebrated that there are limos and lineups outside. For about $10 each my table feasted on dumplings stuffed with barbecued pork, chicken, shrimp and beef, plus exotic a like chicken talons, all heightened with spicy XO sauce.Shop: Even on a budget, shopping is without limits. When you visit street markets such as Jardine’s Bazaar or the Ladies’ Market, you can score almost everything for $5-20, if you negotiate. At the Jade Market, I stocked up on pendants and bracelets for gifts at $20-30.Vendors along Cat Street in Soho display bookshelf bibelots at great prices. I love Li Yuen Street East and West in Central for colourful silk brocade jackets and fringed scarves. And Tai Ping Shan Street is the artsy centre of the “it” district of Sheung Wan.The Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium is a traditional department store, ideal for herbal medicines, musical instruments and premium teas.Spa: When I arrived in Hong Kong after a 15-hour flight from Toronto, I was jet-lagged, my legs buckled and my back had ached since we flew over Outer Mongolia. I join the free Tai Chi classes in Kowloon harbour and after gentle movements and balance work, I emerge with a sense of calm and boosted energy. I ferry almost dock to dock to Ten Feet Tall, a day spa specializing in the 5,000-year-old Chinese art of reflexology, or foot massage. It’s worth the $30 splurge. My arches are kneaded like dough while I sink into an oversized white leather chaise and sip chilled cucumber water.Nature: I want to feel Hong Kong’s origins as a fishing village and see sailing junks and beautiful beaches. While high-budget visitors are fluttering to Sai Kung aboard The Peninsula’s helicopter, I swipe my Octopus transit card and board a train and a bus to explore the coastal town’s bountiful markets of still-jumping fish and strange crustaceans. Loaf On, at the far end of a cobblestone promenade of bustling restaurants, is another one-Michelin-star eatery where a delectable spread of clams in black bean sauce, scallops with garlic and stirfried squid will cost about $25.Tea: The elegant, historic Lok Cha Tea House presents ceremonial tastings of jasmine, rose, black, green and white teas. If you book through the Hong Kong Tourism Board, some of the visits are free. The priceless extra is that Lok Cha is in Hong Kong Park, a serene botanical garden and bird sanctuary gurgling with fish ponds and waterfalls, a rare respite from the city’s bustle. © Copyright (c) The Montreal Gazette       E-mail this Article Print this Article Share this Article

Microsoft Details Dynamics CRM, ERP Progress

The software giant updates its Dynamics business software ecosystem with more cloud options, new templates and mobile enhancements.
During the Microsoft Dynamics Convergence 2013 EMEA conference in Barcelona, Spain, the company unveiled new features and enhancements for its customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software suites.
Eighteen new configurable process templates from the company have been added to the Dynamics CRM Marketplace. The free templates cover a number of industries, including health care, government and nonprofit and sports management, and even niches like prison offender management. On the mobile front, Microsoft has released new apps for iPhones, Windows Phone and Android phones that deliver “touch-optimized experiences,” including analytics capabilities.
To sweeten the deal for Office 365 customers, Microsoft is running a promotion that cuts the cost of the company’s cloud-based Dynamics CRM Online offering . Through March 31, 2014, the software maker is offering up to a 40 percent discount on the price of Dynamics CRM Online professional licenses in 42 markets.
Microsoft also previewed added functionality that the company is working on for the April 2014 release of its flagship ERP product, Dynamics AX 2012 R3. Updates include “new warehouse and transportation management capabilities” for real-time insights into supply-chain processes and new Lifecycle Services that streamline and standardize processes, helping “improve the predictability of Microsoft Dynamics AX implementations,” according to the company.
Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3 will also be cloud-enabled. The software can be deployed on Windows Azure on an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) basis, allowing for “true choice and portability between on-premises and private cloud deployments,” boasted Microsoft in a statement. Microsoft also reasserted that the next version of Dynamics AX will be offered in both on-premise and public cloud versions.
Rounding out the improvements is an updated Microsoft Dynamics Business Analyzer app. Available in the Windows Marketplace, the app delivers business insights to mobile users and helps them connect to their social networks.
Microsoft’s SMB-flavored ERP solution, Dynamics NAV, is nearing a big milestone, revealed the company. “Microsoft Dynamics NAV is closing in on 100,000 customers worldwide, a significant milestone for this product,” said the company in a statement. Dynamics NAV 2013 R2 was released on October, bringing with it a software-as-a-service (SaaS) version, new user interfaces for both the Web and Windows client, and cash-management tools.
The improvements are aimed at helping businesses better engage with today’s informed customers and tackle the challenge of ever-changing market conditions with built-in intelligence and collaboration features. In a keynote address, Kirill Tatarinov, executive vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions, was quoted as saying that “people are more informed and better connected than ever.”
“Businesses urgently need solutions to unite and empower their people so they can best serve and nurture their customers. Microsoft is positioned to deliver agile, integrated business solutions that will help organizations in this new era by delivering amazing customer experiences,” added Tatarinov.

Christian Louboutin op de verkoop Roc Nation’s Melanie Fiona recently kicked off her EOS Tour with label mates Bridget Kelly and Elijah Blake in Atlanta. Before she hit the stage, Cocoa Fab got the chance to catch up with the Grammy winner on her personal style, DIY beauty treatments and the one thing she’d save from her closet if there was a fire.
Christian Louboutin schoenen korting te koop COCOA FAB : Tell me how your style has evolved as an artist and even as a woman.
MELANIE FIONA : As a woman, I’ve gotten way more comfortable with my body and knowing how to dress my body. That is like the biggest thing I think everyone needs to understand: you need to know how to dress for your body type. And you know, I’m not very tall, like 5’4”, but people are always like “you’re so tall!” and I’m like, “I’m really not.” It’s because on stage you see me in these huge 6 inch heels. I wear specific shoe on stage because it’s like Dorothy’s slippers. For me, that’s how I feel about my boots and my Christian Louboutins. Those are my performance shoes. Otherwise, you can catch me in sneakers, army boots or sandals. My everyday wear is very “tomboy bohemian”. But when it comes to stage, I’m definitely a little bit stronger, a little bit more rock n’ roll. So you’re definitely gonna see some pattern, see some leather, see some leg. Yeah, I like to have my legs out. It’s empowering and I work hard for these legs. It makes me comfortable. And when that’s how you feel it translates to stage.
CF : So you’ve narrowed down your style, but what about beauty? Especially now that you’ve partnered up with EOS for this tour?
MF : I break the rules like everyone else. Sometimes I fall asleep with my makeup on, it’s not okay. I’ll definitely wake up with a blemish the next day for sure. But over the years, I feel like I’ve grown to like product and I’m not afraid to try new things. I do my own hair and makeup for almost everything. I did it for the Grammys this year, I do it on my tours. It’s funny because initially it started because you have no money when you’re first starting [as an artist].
Coconut oil is an all purpose amazing thing. If your hair is really dry, if your skin is really dry, you can do a coconut oil mask, you can lotion your body with it, and then you smell delicious. You can cook with it. You can also rinse your mouth with it like how you do with mouthwash it’s really good for mouth health and heart health because your gums and everything are related.
I think a great product line that’s great for your skin and not too expensive is Clinique, if you have normal skin. If you’re having like a breakout or something like that I really like the Murad Acne Complex Treatment. If I’m sweating on stage or forget to take my makeup off, I use my Murad for a week and it resets my skin.
CF : If we looked in your purse right now, what would we find?
MF : The two things I could never live without: chap stick and mascara. Because I feel like my eyes are not awake when I don’t have mascara on. And then, you know, you can’t have dry lips. I’m not like a super gloss girl. But I love my EOS. It’s become this thing I always have to have with me. My favorite one is the honeydew! And the thing about it is you can always find it in your bag.
CF : So what about your closet? If there was a fire and only one thing got saved what would you have it be?
MF : *gasps* That is tough. That is a tough one. Um, ooooooh man. One thing only?!
CF : One thing!
MF : Damn. Honestly, it’s gonna be the shoes I wear on stage. The Christian Louboutin “Daffodil” booties. They are the all purpose boot. I have one for when I go out and hang out and socializing, and then I have the ones that I perform with when I’m on stage. And they are a great boot. You can dress them up, you can wear them with skirts, you can wear with jeans and I wear them on stage. For me, they are functional in all areas in my life. And they’re actually really comfortable.
CF : That’s surprising because that Daffodil heel is no joke.
MF : Maybe because I’m an athlete at heart but I like the platform. It’s very high. For me, maybe because I’m rough the platform makes me feel more stable. Because I think you have to be a little more dainty when you wear pumps. And I’m just not dainty.
CF : Are you not?
MF : No, I’m not dainty. I’m like, very low maintenance. I just went and got my hair treated two days ago because it was breaking. I’m very do-it-yourself. I do my own manicures, pedicures, I’ll treat myself eventually when it’s time. I like being girly, but I just don’t do all the things that girls do. I’m no fuss. I don’t do lashes, it’s just too much. I turn them down at photoshoots.
CF : Ok, so what’s your favorite DIY beauty treatment?
MF : My favorite DIY beauty treatment is a salt scrub in the shower with exfoliating gloves. You can get a really great scrub from Aveda or I use a sugar scrub from Julep and pair it up with exfoliating gloves and then follow it up with coconut oil.
CF : Any last words? Anything you want us to remember?
MF : I just sing. I wanna be respected as a really great singer. Anything else is icing on the cake.

E dunque siamo tornati a bomba.

Demands of rich Chinese travelers pose challenges for operators By Arnie Weissmann MARRAKECH, Morocco — “I will never again book a group from China,” the CEO of an upscale tour operation told me a month ago. northface “A typical tour has four stages,” he continued. THE NORTH FACE outlet online vendita “The first stage involves a tremendous amount of client contact as they figure out exactly what they want to do. giacche parete nord Lots of questions and back-and-forth until they reach a decision and put down a deposit. The North Face vendita “Then comes a lull, with very little contact — that’s the second stage. The North Face vendita But questions start up again as the trip nears, mostly about details: What will the weather be like? What should they bring? When will they receive vouchers? Things like that. THE NORTH FACE outlet online vendita “And then, unless something goes amiss, you don’t hear from them while they’re actually traveling.” But an African safari his company recently put together for a group of Chinese millionaires proved to be anything but typical. “It never stopped,” he said. “From the day they first contacted us, they kept asking questions and making changes to the itinerary.” During the first and second stages, he dedicated a staff member to the group almost full time as questions poured in. Then, two days into the trip, he received an urgent note that they wanted to change just about everything that remained. “They had chosen an extended stay at a tented camp. We had explained exactly what that entailed, but once there, they decided they didn’t like it and wanted to move into an upscale lodge immediately.” It wasn’t easy finding space on short notice, and the operator had to send someone to Kenya to accompany them for the balance of the trip. “It was a nightmare. And,” he added, “they were terrible travelers. Noisy. Smoking. Littering. Inappropriate dress. I’m done with them.” I recounted the story to Jacqueline Cheung last week at the Pure Life Experiences conference here. Cheung, a 20-something translator-turned-product manager, had come to Marrakech to scout for suppliers who might be a good match to host the 40 groups of Chinese millionaires she sends abroad each year. She seemed unfazed by the report. “It’s typical,” she said of the endless questions and enormous changes at the last moment. “But we have solutions.” A demanding group Cheung is one of two Chinese outbound operators whom I shadowed as they shopped for products at Pure Life Experiences, a high-end showcase of experiential travel. What I discovered, as F. Scott Fitzgerald might have put it, is that rich Chinese travelers are different from other rich travelers. Wealthy Chinese, it was agreed among the Chinese buyers, are extraordinarily demanding. Cheung’s solution, she said, is to flood them with information: a steady stream of booklets and other documents along with relevant guest speakers. Before a recent trip to Israel, she engaged the former Chinese ambassador to that country to address the travelers. And on the eve of every trip, she assembles group members for a briefing and answers any final questions. As a wholetailer, she may be in a unique position to pull a group together physically. She works for SoulUniq, a travel club in Guangzhou that is much like a gentlemen’s club in London, with a physical building where members can congregate and enjoy six-course Cantonese meals prepared by a chef that SoulUniq recruited from the Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong. The club, she said, “is the platform,” and its primary purpose is travel. Her search for suppliers was more than a review of their products. “I need to find suppliers who are ready for the Chinese market,” she said. “Otherwise, no matter how much support I provide, it’s meaningless.” Antarctica is hugely popular among Chinese, and she stopped at the OneOcean Expeditions booth to shop for a ship to charter. In that meeting, it emerged that when Chinese travelers fan out across the world, months that are typically considered slow seasons in many destinations can heat up considerably. The Chinese New Year is typically in late January or early February, and her club members are also particularly interested in travel in May and October. It also became clear that Antarctica’s popularity is a reflection of the Chinese upper class’ desire to visit places whose scenery and activities are nothing like what can be found within their own country, a tendency that informed every conversation Cheung had with suppliers. For example, Myanmar is a hot destination with European and North American travelers, but it didn’t necessarily fit the destination profile she was looking for. After talking with Win Htoon, product manager of Essence of Myanmar, she told me she was unimpressed with photos of Pagan. “Temples,” she said somewhat dismissively, though she did express interest in luxury balloon rides over the region. I told her I had seen many temples, but that Pagan stood out; it was one of the most beautiful places I’d ever visited. “That’s not how the Chinese will look at it,” she said. “They can see plenty of temples in China. The idea is not to see something beautiful but to see something you have never seen before.” She was interested in river-related activities but added that overall, the scenery was similar to, but less impressive than what could be found in China. She spent several minutes exploring with Htoon if there were ways to incorporate the story of Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition candidate who transformed the country into a democracy, into the trip. “Can we visit her house?” Cheong asked. “It’s not possible,” he said. “We can drive by it. Maybe her father’s house. We can drive by the prison where she was held.” “It has to be a place where the group can stop and her story be told,” Cheong said. A short booking window Htoon said they could do something. He then told her that in high season, she would need to book six months in advance. She was taken aback. “That’s really difficult for the Chinese market,” she said, explaining that she typically books three months in advance, with changes right up to the last minute. Her next stop was at the table of Paws Up, a luxury Montana ranch. She seemed impressed. “Is there good golfing nearby?” “Pebble Beach, but it’s not very close,” replied John Romfo, vice president of sales and marketing. Cheong said distances meant very little to her groups because “they’ve already come a very long way.” In fact, she was looking at Montana as an optional extension for a group she was bringing to Augusta, Ga., to watch the Masters. After the meeting, she said the mythic American West has a strong pull for Chinese travelers. I asked if she had considered Yellowstone National Park. “No,” she said. “Yellowstone is very well known. It’s not that my members want to brag, but if they are in a conversation with someone obnoxious who says they’ve been to Yellowstone, my member can say, ‘Yes, but have you been to Montana?’” Next stop: the booth of Fjallnas, a lodge on the Swedish side of the border with Norway. She concluded it was something she and her friends might enjoy, but it was “too quiet” for her groups. Her final stop of the day was with CGH Earth, a Kerala, India, hotel group. She asked a lot of questions about houseboat stays in the backwaters, which she found unique. She also felt that Kalari Kovilakom, an ayurvedic hotel clinic and spa, might appeal to her groups, though she had concerns about needing a translator. The next day, I shadowed Amy Tsai of the online startup Zanadu. Tsai, also in her 20s, became Zanadu’s director of business development after a short stint with an investment banking house in Hong Kong. Backed by a Chinese private equity company and with an experienced hotelier among its principals, it hopes to capture Chinese travelers who are interested in four- or five-star hotels that have an experiential aspect rather than a well-known brand. “The language barrier is significant,” she said. “The Chinese may know Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton but may not have heard of Cipriani in Venice.” Zanadu focuses on hotels and currently it offers profiles of 600 properties. The founders had initially wanted to charge hotels for the listings but found they first had to prove their worth. While Zanadu does not offer the all-out hand-holding services of SoulUniq, its concierge division can arrange air, transfers and restaurant bookings, and the company holds offline events at banks to attract high-net-worth individuals. It sold about $10 million in bookings last year, and is on track to double that for 2013, Tsai said. For foreign companies that want more marketing reach than the website offers, her backers started a sister company, Red Hummingbird. Zanadu wants to branch out beyond hotels, and we visited Butterfield & Robinson, best-known for its biking trips through Europe’s wine regions. It also offers hiking and now operates in several regions of the world. After hearing the company’s CEO, Norman Howe, describe his offerings, she seemed doubtful that they were a good fit. Her group, she said, wanted to ride in Mercedes-Benzes, not on bicycles, to wineries. “Perhaps the younger generation,” she said. “It may take some time to groom this market.” Howe noted Butterfield & Robinson was not about “punching out kilometers” or athleticism, but rather had “a gentle amount of exercise” as a component. I asked Tsai if, generally speaking, her clients were interested in fitness. “Medical tours to Switzerland are very popular,” she said, “to get shots that make you look young again. They care about fitness, but in a less athletic way.” (Listening to the exchange between Tsai and Howe, it also occurred to me that, to a 55-year-old Chinese citizen who had spent his or her young adulthood with no alternative to biking everywhere, riding on vacation might have limited appeal.) Howe predicted that Chinese preferences would likely evolve over time and that, should the Chinese begin to book bicycle trips, theirs would probably have to be altered somewhat. Ten percent of his customers are now Brazilian, he said, and he found that he had to tailor itineraries for them that, among other things, take into account Brazilians’ “elastic” sense of time. Tsai’s final assessment: “It’s very interesting, and I’d love to see how this develops, but I honestly don’t see Chinese millionaires riding bikes.” Evolution When I had first related what a tour operator had told me about the demanding Chinese millionaires to SoulUniq’s Cheung, she said his experience was typical, but she also said that the stereotype of Chinese travelers as noisy litterbugs would change over time. Her company, she said, addressed the problem head-on. “I understand that there are restaurants in Europe that, when a Chinese group sits down, they put down cards in front of them, written in Chinese, asking them to keep their voices down,” Tsai said. “That is offensive. First of all, not every Chinese traveler is like that. I would like to change the image. And we talk about cultural sensitivity in our pre-departure meetings.” Cheung said that although Chinese preferences and behavior will undoubtedly evolve, Westerners should keep in mind that, as with so many aspects of Chinese society, the concept of “face” is behind travel decisions. A Chinese citizen doesn’t exactly make travel decisions alone; he or she is always mindful of how society will view the decision. By that measure, the Chinese are not so different from the rest of the world. We all like to extend the joy of our trips by sharing our experiences with others, and rare is the person who does not feel some pride in his or her travels. I think the differences are twofold: First, the diversity of our society leads to more diverse choices and travel behaviors; “face” has many faces in the U.S. And second, many of us have become, over the last 30 years, experienced travelers. Although stereotypes of the loud, naive and culturally insensitive American traveler still linger, they have certainly been tempered as Americans have gained more and more experience traveling abroad. “I will never again book a group from China,” my tour operator friend had said. “Never” is a long time. I’ll ask for an update in 10 years. Email Arnie Weissmann at aweissmann@ and follow him on Twitter .

A Crocodile’s Bumpy Road From Farm to Handbag

hermes These days, women of every economic stripe can be seen carrying pricey leather handbags. Not so with totes made of crocodile, one of the most difficult luxury materials to obtain, especially in the pristine condition wealthy fashionistas expect. As demand from the world’s elite surges for the skins, luxury goods companies such as LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton ( MC:FP ) and Kering ( KER:FP ) , the owner of Gucci, are making acquisitions to secure a supply of the beasts, whose habits make even collecting their eggs a matter of life and death. Keeping crocodiles from scratching or biting each other as you raise them from hatchling to arm candy is another major challenge.
hermes online outlet “Louis Vuitton, Prada ( 1913:HK ) , and Gucci are trying to elevate the level of perceived exclusivity of their brands, and exotic-skin products really help,” says Mario Ortelli, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein. Such skins make up almost 10 percent of the total revenue for luxury brands’ handbag sales, at least double their share a few years ago, he estimates. The incentive for luxury goods companies, many of which are wrestling with sluggish demand for their most widely available products, is clear: Crocodile handbags can cost more than 10 times similar leather ones.
hermes outlet online store Photograph by David Wall An Australian crocodile farm, from the air hermes outlet online An Hermès International ( RMS:FP ) Birkin bag, a staple of the wealthy, sells for about $10,000 in leather; the croc version runs about $50,000—with a five-year wait. For those who lack such patience, they’re available used on EBay ( EBAY ) for as much as $150,000. “There are women who don’t care about money that love the beautiful things,” says Gianluca Brozzetti, chief executive officer of fashion house Roberto Cavalli. “Demand for crocodile and alligator is large because I think it is one of the trends that never ends. It is a classic.”
hermes bag outlet Although saltwater porosus crocodiles can fetch higher prices, freshwater Nile crocs found in Africa aren’t as territorial or aggressive—although they’re hardly friendly. “If I’d known how hard this business was before I’d got into it, I may not be here today,” says Stefan van As, a former investment banker and owner of South Africa’s Le Croc breeding farm and tannery, which sends about 5,000 Nile crocodile skins to Europe each year.
ermes outlet online shop Cow-leather hides are a byproduct of animals raised for beef. For a crocodile farmer, it’s the skins that pay the bills. (Some people consider croc meat a delicacy, but growers such as Van As simply feed it to the other animals.) An average handbag can be crafted from as few as two skins, for which Van As gets as much as $600 each.
While cows can ruminate for hours on their own in a meadow, from the moment a crocodile hatchling snaps its way out of the egg, Van As has to provide a calm environment to keep the critter from getting restless and damaging its hide. So the reptiles have their pens cleaned daily and are kept on a strict feeding schedule. They dine mostly on chicken and vitamin-fortified oils to improve their skin. All this care promotes growth, reduces stress, and helps keep the contented crocs’ jaws off each other. “The bottom line is that one cannot expect to harvest a first-grade skin from an animal which has been abused,” Van As says.
Nile crocodiles grow to about 16 feet long and weigh up to 1,500 pounds, or about two-thirds the size of the biggest porosus . And they’ll eat almost any prey that ends up in the water. Van As says a rival farmer was killed after falling in. “These are prehistoric animals that rely on instinct to protect themselves,” says Loic Bellet, a marketing executive at Via la Moda, which makes crocodile handbags in Johannesburg. “Obtaining a perfect skin is not easy.”
To protect the belly—the best part for bags—the slaughter, skinning, and even some of the tanning process at Le Croc are done by hand. At about three years of age, when they weigh roughly 50 pounds and are about 6 feet long, the animals are slaughtered. Van As carefully stuns his crocs twice, then cuts the nape of their necks and scrambles their brains with a needle. Some farmers are less gentle, Ben Williamson, a spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said in an e-mail. This “often results in the crocodile enduring multiple blows, leading to a slow and painful death.”
To help avoid slaughter of wild crocodiles, each skin needs a certificate proving it’s not in violation of international protocols protecting endangered species. Thanks to the success of farming, which yields higher-quality skins, crocs no longer face extinction.
LVMH in February bought an Australian crocodile farm for $2.5 million to assure a steady flow of the animals. The following month, Kering bought tannery France Croco, a Normandy-based operation specializing in the sourcing and processing of crocodile skins for makers of leather goods. “It’s complicated to buy exotic skins,” says Jean Cassegrain, CEO of luxury house Longchamp, which sometimes purchases croc skins from rival luxury houses. “The supply is very limited.”

The bottom line: Accessories made from pristine crocodile skins can cost up to 10 times as much as those made of cow leather.

- Vannflasken Kilde!

1. Skjær hull i toppen
Tiffany fabrikkutsalg

Piece of cake.

The Act of Killing
Terje Eidsvåg
Joshua Oppenheimer
Dokumentar
Dansk-britisk

(©NTB)

World’s 12 best shopping cities
By Violet Kim , for CNN
updated 8:31 AM EST, Tue November 26, 2013
Where the most credit card transactions per person takes place — read: serious shopping addictions. While foreign luxury goods tend to get a hefty mark up, local boutiques tend to be cheap and very chic.
Home to what many fashion industry insiders consider the world’s most important fashion district, the Quadrilatero della Moda, Milan gave the world Prada, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and many more high-fashion brands.
Madrid ranks third for best prices on luxury items in the Globe Shopper Index. We love it for the glorious sidewalks.
Dubai is known for glamour and excess; the shopping here would have your Scottish/Chinese/Indian/Great Depression grandmother spinning in her inexpensive plywood coffin. Home to the world’s largest mall, Dubai is also home to an indoor ski resort … at a mall.
Vienna’s early closing hours don’t have to be a total buzz kill. It has some of the best values in Europe, second on the index for total cost of luxury items.
How many styles can you pack into one place? Buenos Aires is famous for leather and jewelry and style-obsessed citizens.
“Shopping is one of, if not the, major attraction in Hong Kong. The city ranks highly across most indicators, not least for convenience,” says the Global Shopper Index, which deems Hong Kong the best shopping city in Asia. According to the research, 76% of shopping tourists “expressed above-average satisfaction on value for money in 2011.”
The best shops in Paris sell lifestyles. Case in point: Whimsical shop Merci stocks designer goods that fall under the category of utterly useless but absolutely irresistible.
Bigger is better in the mind of Kuala Lumpur shopper’s ethics. Three of the world’s 10 largest malls are in Kuala Lumpur, and the number one mall Utama has more than 650 shops, Asia’s largest indoor rock climbing facility and a massive rooftop garden.
London prices can destroy your will to live. But get over the sticker shock and you’ll see London shopping at its best. Bold, eclectic and international, Liberty department store will inspire you to buy things you never knew existed.
The best of Tokyo shopping can be found in the department store. Isetan’s mammoth flagship in Shinjuku has shopping consultants who will advise customers on everything from shoes to fish.
Where personal stylists and designer showrooms (and better yet, discounted designer showrooms) abound, New York’s exclusive shopping experiences include curated vintage shopping, fashion history tours and discount mega-department stores.

(CNN) — From a shopper’s perspective, frequent traveling can be crippling. It can get worse in the holiday season where Christmas dominates many people’s calendars. Why buy something in one city when a trip to a better shopping city is coming up?lv
To pinpoint which cities around the world deliver the most gratifying, enjoyable shopping experiences, we consulted global experts, such as fashion merchandising firm Donegar Creative Services and Marie Bergfelt, senior spokesperson for Global Blue, which publishes the Globe Shopper City Index.louis vuitton handbags on sale
Then we judged cities in four areas, using a one-to-10 scoring scale for each category:louis vuitton outlet store
1. Getting around: Quality of public transportation, affordability and availability of cabs, transport timediscount louis vuitton
2. Value: Bargain opportunities, such as sale seasons and average prices.replica louis vuitton handbags
3. Variety: Number of available brands, range of shopping categories, quantity of upscale shops, department stores, boutique and vintage retailers and market stalls.louis vuitton store
4. Experience: City beauty, quality of window displays and shop décor, friendliness and competence of clerks and service staff, dining and accommodation options.
Then we charged into the breach.
Lotte Department Store in the Myeongdong district is one of Seoul’s most insanely popular shopping centers.

Fact: South Korea has a serious addiction to shopping. The most serious in the world, in fact.
South Korea recorded more credit card transactions per person than any other country in 2011, and all merchants are required by law to accept credit cards no matter how low the price. Yes, that means the phrase “cash only, please” is technically illegal.
This translates to a capital city bursting with shops of a dizzying array of types and sizes, from LED-fish-scale-studded luxury department stores to towering all-nighter shopping malls to trendy street carts , which all reflect the ever-changing hottest item of the moment.
While foreign luxury goods tend to get a hefty mark-up (except at the airport, which boasts the first Louis Vuitton airport duty free store , as well as cheap prices for most foreign brands), local boutiques tend to be cheap and chic.
The city also has a good mix of the old and new, according to the Globe Shopper Index, which recommends the Seoul Folk Flea Market , Namdaemun Market and Gyeongdong Market for a shopping spree of more traditional goods.

Home to many of fashion’s biggest names such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Versace, it’s little wonder this beautiful city is full of glamorous locals and shops that cater to them.
One of the most beautiful (if expensive) shopping experiences can be found at Quadrilatero della Moda or Quadrilatero d’Oro (‘rectangle of gold’), which many fashion insiders consider is the world’s most important fashion district.
The interwoven pedestrian streets are lined with jewelers, boutiques and lifestyle showrooms that make for great window shopping.
While the boutiques cater to the alligator-bag-and-black-card-toting crowd, luckily for bargain shoppers, yesterday’s styles are tossed aside so fast, outlets and sales racks are always full.
Il Salvagente (“the lifesaver”), Milan’s best known and longest established outlet, has three floors of goods discounted up to 60%, all organized by size and color.
No one back home needs to know it was bought at an outlet mall — Milan fashions are always months ahead of the trends elsewhere.

Madrid mostly gets our credit cards warm simply for being Madrid, though it’s worth noting that the city ranks third for best prices on general luxury items in the Globe Shopper Index.
But we can’t wow our friends with statistics (not our shopping friends, anyway), so what about the goods?
When searching for items unique to Madrid, we fell in love with Capas Seseña.
Established in 1901, the shop sells traditional wool and cotton velvet capes for men and women. The clientele includes Pierce Brosnan and Hillary Clinton. Picasso was reportedly buried in his cape from the store .
Casa de Diego stocks souvenir-worthy fans, mantillas, ornamental combs and even castanets. But what we really wanted to take home was one of its work-of-art statement umbrellas with engraved silver handle (€325/US$415).

A miniature kingdom unto itself, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest mall in total area, with theme parks, a waterfall, “dancing” fountains, Olympic-sized ice rink, aquarium, indoor souk and malls within the mall, such as the Galeries Lafayette from France and the first Bloomingdale’s outside the United States .
If that isn’t enough cash registers, there’s also the Mall of the Emirates, with the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East.
The Dubai Mall also hosts the annual Dubai Shopping Festival in January and February. We assume it’s called a festival because they have fireworks, but it’s really about package deals and discounts — up to 70% on electronics, clothing and popular items.
The 2014 Festival starts January 2 and runs until February 2.

With some of the earliest closing hours out of all the cities on the Globe Shopper Index, Vienna is tricky for shopping.
Total buzz kill, right?
But it also has some of the best values in Europe, coming in second on the Index for total cost of luxury items.
At the centuries-old Naschmarkt, shoppers can eat their way along 1.5 kilometers of 120 food vendors flogging local eats from kaiserschmarrn (dessert pancakes) and crepe-like palatschinke to exotic cheeses and seafood.

Sexy Argentine dance moves + sexy Argentine climate = sexy Argentine shopping.
Yes, the formula sort of sometimes works like that, especially when you’re stalking high-quality leather at affordable prices.
Established in Buenos Aires in 1952, Mocasines Guido sells leather shoes for men; today there are three locations in Buenos Aires.
Calle Murillo is a street with leather shops that also offer tailoring services. Murillo 666 is perhaps the best known, but about 50 more surround it, a handy surfeit of shops come haggle time.

Hong Kong ‘s shop clerks are borderline stalkers — in a good way.
If you don’t know where you’re going, they’ll follow you around till you find it. If you don’t know what you want, they’ll tell you.
But the obsessive help can come in handy, especially if it leads to a world-class bargain.
According to Global Shopper City Index research, 87 percent of Hong Kong tourists shop, and “76 percent of shopping tourists expressed above-average satisfaction on value for money in 2011.” Small wonder that Hong Kong also claims the title of best Asian shopping city in the Index.

The best shops in Paris don’t sell clothes. They sell lifestyles.
Whimsical concept shop Merci stocks a selection of designer goods that fall under the category of utterly useless but absolutely desirable, such as art deco Bakelite switches. It’s housed in an airy and vaguely bucolic space that includes a secondhand bookshop, florist and café. In addition to the Annick Goutal scent line, Merci stocks apparel by Stella McCartney and Yves St Laurent, often with deep discounts.

Colette offers reduced prices on designer goods. Then again, if you’re like us, whatever you save on a Fendi dress might be spent on stylin’ necessities like a bottle of Bling H2O , which comes in a frosted glass bottle decorated with Swarovski crystals. It’s available for about US$50 at the downstairs “water bar,” which has more than 70 brands of bottled water.
And, of course, there’s the holy trinity of Parisian department stores:
Le Bon Marché dates to the 1850s. It’s famed for a monster section of gourmet food (5,000 choices strong).
Printemps has the world’s largest beauty department. This year the store is partnering with Christian Dior for an exclusive line.
Extravagant Galeries Lafayette is housed in a seven-story art nouveau structure with an entire floor dedicated to lingerie. Sometimes bigger really is better.
That’s the prevailing shopper’s ethic in Kuala Lumpur , anyway.
Three of the world’s 10 largest malls are in KL, including 1 Utama, the world’s fourth-largest mall with more than 650 shops, Asia’s largest indoor rock climbing facility, massive rooftop garden with 500 species of exotic plants and indoor rainforest with koi ponds and freshwater aquarium.
KL’s impressive score comes from its winning combination of high quality shopping, affordable prices and reliable sales, which can stretch for several months. This year’s Year-End-Sale , from November 10 to January 1, is just one doozy of an example.

London prices can destroy your will to live. And that’s just the cab fare to get to the shopping areas.
But get over the sticker shock and you’ll probably agree with its Globe Shopper Index ranking as top European shopping city and its Donegar Group nod as the world’s top fashion shopping destination.
The Globe Shopper City Index notes that London outstrips all the other European cities in both the quantity of shops and availability of international and local brands.
London shopping at its best is bold, eclectic and international. Case in point: department store Liberty.
Liberty may have a Tudor-style exterior and fireplaces, but its stock is contemporary and cool, encompassing in-house designer stationary, clever kitchen accessories to upstage your neighbors and clothes from a select pool of local and international designers.
Of course, you might end up with a £245 (US$390) Mathieu Challières Mini Volière Bird Cage Table Lamp, but that’s the black magic of a wonderful shop — it inspires you to buy things you never knew existed.

The ultimate Tokyo shopping experience is the department store. Walk into one and you’ll be met like a royal.
Global chain Isetan has its mammoth flagship store in Shinjuku, eight separate buildings stretched along two blocks. Isetan has English, Chinese and Korean-speaking staff and a personalized interpretation service, as well as shopping consultants who will advise you on everything from shoes to fish, all available through reservation (+81 3 3225 2514).
A foodie heaven, the basement has dainty Japanese bento boxes as well as French pastries and macaroons. When shopping for clothes you can take a break from the international luxury brands on stock to try on some kimonos.
Tokyo’s shopping is also surprisingly affordable, according to the Globe Shopper City Index, with Asia’s fourth-cheapest shopping, and the cheapest average price for a Canon EOS 600D body.

Braszczok, an undercover New York police detective, was arraigned on gang assault charges for his part in an attack on an SUV driver that was captured on video and went viral on YouTube.pandora jewelry sale Good morning! Here’s what you need to know.pandora sale
Markets in Asia finished mostly lower. Korea’s Kospi closed down -1.16%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was off -0.51%. Japan’s Nikkei bucked the trend, climbing 1.92%. European stocks were seeing uneven gains. U.S. futures were pointing higher.
China’s November HSBC manufacturing flash PMI fell to a two-month low of 50.4, from 50.9 last month. This was the first decline in the index in five months. “The optimism unleashed by China’s reform plan is today hammered by the reality of weaker economic data,” said Societe Generale economist Wei Yao “Although the headline figure of 50.4 still indicated expansion, we caution that the acceleration trend of activity growth is reaching its end,” added Yao.
The Eurozone’s Flash Composite Output Index fell to 51.5 in November from 51.9 in October. Economists were expecting a reading of 52.0. France’s private sector contracted. “Any improvements were largely confined to Germany, where the PMI has notched up the best growth since mid-2011 so far in the fourth quarter, signaling a 0.5% increase in GDP,” said Markit economist Chris Williamson . “France, on the other hand, showed further signs of being ‘the sick man of Europe’ with output showing a renewed decline and raising the risk that GDP could fall again in the fourth quarter, constituting a renewed recession. Meanwhile growth outside the ‘big two’ slowed to near-stagnation.” Germany was the lone bright spot with flash PMI climbing 110 bps to 54.3.
European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi refused to comment on rumors that the agency was leaning toward negative interest rates, saying there was no “new” news and emphasizing they’d already raised it as a possibility. But he did say the eurozone had been “witnessing disinflation in slow motion for several months now,” according to the FT.
The FT is also saying that Portugal may need another bailout , a sharp contrast with Ireland, where Troika assistance has just wound down. “Many officials in Lisbon and Brussels believe Portugal is almost certain to avail itself of the backstop Dublin shunned when its bailout ends next June: a short-term line of credit from the eurozone’s €500bn rescue fund. But several senior officials directly involved in overseeing Portugal’s €78bn bailout fear a so-called ‘precautionary programme’ may not be enough.”
Goldman Sachs is bullish on stocks. In a new note, chief equities analyst David Kostin predicts growth will lead U.S. markets as much as 23% higher through 2016 . “Our [2014] return forecast reflects rising, albeit decelerating, profit growth and a slightly lower P/E multiple,” said Kostin. “The linchpin of our market forecast is growth – in the economy, sales, and earnings. We expect 3.6% global economic growth. The US will advance at a 3% pace while inflation remains contained at 1.4%. China, Japan, and even Europe will all grow, expanding GDP by 7.8%, 1.6%, and 1.5%, respectively. Sales and earnings growth are a direct result of economic activity. We expect revenue growth of 5% (ex-Financials and Utilities) and overall EPS growth of 8% in 2014. Growth in these metrics should continue in 2015, 2016, and 2017.”
A busy day in economics. As usual, at 8:30 am, we get weekly jobless claims, which are expected to decline 4,000 to 335,000. The latest producer price index also prints at that time, with core inflation of 0.1% expected. At 8:58 am, we’ll learn the flash U.S. purchasing manager’s index for manufacturing. Consensus is for 53.0. Finally at 10 am we get the latest Philadelphia Fed’s Business Outlook Survey for November, which is expected to fall 4.3 points MOM to 15.5. Three different Fed officials — St. Louis President James Bullard, Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker, and Governor Jerome Powell — speak today.
Also a busy day for retail-related earnings. Target is already down -2% after reporting lower-than-expected revenues. Sears, Gap, Abercrombie and Fitch, Ross Stores, Dollar Tree and Perry Ellis also all report before the bell. And we’ll get Pandora after the bell.
Consumer Reports says Tesla Model S owners gave the electric vehicle the highest satisfaction score any car has seen in years: 99 out of 100. Porsche Boxters came in second. Tesla shares have been taking it on the chin since October, when three drivers reported the car catching on fire in. The stock was downgraded by Barclays yesterday on concern the reports could impact sales. BI’s Alex Davies explained why the concerns are probably misplaced: the three fires amount to one fire for every 33.3 million miles driven in a Tesla, compared with the U.S. average of 1 in 16 million miles.
The Wall Street Journal reports on the “burgeoning business known as political intelligence,” where people with access to policy changes like or former government officials “gather insights on policy changes that they then sell to investors.” But the paper says investigators are having some difficulty figuring out when a research outlet has simply made a good call rather than illicitly obtained insider information. They cite a recent example of a change in Medicare payments correctly called by consulting firm Height Securities just before it was announced that sent health care stocks soaring.

Discretion is the better part of valour
Published: 8 Nov 2013 at 02.22
Newspaper section: Life
While Thailand is currently buzzing with the anti-amnesty bill protests, this week another news item also captured my attention. It would have been elevated to talk-of-the-town status if it weren’t for the current political quagmire.
hermes The news was of Pakorn Chatborirak, one of Thailand’s biggest and highest paid stars, who staged a press conference in the midst of this political intensity. Basically, he wanted to apologise to the public for his behaviour, and his mother came along to offer her apologies as well. Through heavy tears and hiccups, he “bravely” admitted that the guy in a photo that has been circulating on the big, bad internet was indeed him. What photo? Well, basically, it was a photo of his back _ fully clothed _ with his face slightly turned so you could see it was him. Pakorn appears to be zipping up his trousers while the foot of a woman lying on the bed is visible at the bottom of the picture. From the camera angle, it seems to be that it was she who had taken the photo.
outlet store To cut a long story short, the photo apparently depicts a scene of post-coitus ritual where a guy is about to flee, but someone took a photo.
birkin handbags Apparently, it has been doing the rounds on social networks, and finally Pakorn came forward to say that he had indulged in a casual liaison with some girl while he was on holiday in South Korea. With tears in his eyes he profusely apologised while repeating that his actions were unspeakable and he deserved to be punished, but he would like the public to give him a chance to redeem himself. His mother’s words were along the same line, as she publicly chided her son.
hermes bag outlet I was stunned. And I’m not easily stunned.
outlet store No, it wasn’t because I found out that this fully grown, single man had casual sex. No, it wasn’t the woman’s mangy foot. No, it wasn’t how tiny the hotel room was.
hermes handbags outlet It was the sheer fact that I don’t see the need for this press conference and public apology at all. First of all, the sex must have been consensual and the girl must have been of legal age because they supposedly met in a bar, and she reportedly boasted to her friend that they had gone four “rounds” in one night.
I admit it was a little weird for the girl to take photos, but Pakorn is single, and turning 30. As a red-blooded man, I am sure he has needs, and those itches need to be scratched once in a while. So why all his public distress, dramatic display of emotions and, maybe, guilt?
Why did Pakorn have to publicly apologise?
Is it because Thais expect all their favourite stars to uphold some sort of virtues that most of us can’t? Why do we wish these showbiz types to be role models for us and our children? What’s a role model anyway? People who can barely act and Instagram their Hermes bags?
Sex is natural, and it should be private as well as intimate, I agree, but it doesn’t mean that sexual interactions are shameful. It’s something that can be discussed in the open between consenting adults if they wish, and if they don’t, it’s nobody’s business to pry.
Back in the day, pre-marital sex was frowned upon, but I thought those days were long gone. Perhaps those conservative values are still very much intact and I’m just not aware. Surely it’s still a bit of a taboo here to be blatantly open about it, and I don’t wish to hear my friends talk about sex all the time, but on the other hand, we’re also living in a world where porn windows pop up when we try to stream movies, or buy baby clothes online.
I could go on a rampage, and talk about the pros and cons, physical safety and emotional impact of one-night stands or casual flings, but I think most adults are well accustomed to such things whether you want to admit it or not. In my humble opinion, the occasional dalliance, if consensual, safe, of age and not adulterous, is not wrong. There are far worse things in the world.
Thai stars are, after all, human beings, and extreme idolisation is nothing new here, but we really need to get it in check from time to time. Also, all our scandalous stars should take it down a notch as sometimes it’s best not to respond at all. Some of these matters are so trivial, and they can sometimes overreact when no one really cares. Silence would actually be the best antidote.
Despite all the nonsense, I’ve been smirking a little because as the press conference broke, most of the reactions I’ve seen and heard have been more on the indifferent side since they’re knee-deep in politics now. At least my faith in Thai humanity has been restored for a few days as, for once, we’ve proven that we care about the state of our country more than a cute, sexually active boy and an ugly bare foot.
For once.
