Family First Candidate for Blair, Joshua Olyslagers, responded :

Thankyou for this opportunity!! Here are my responses:

> What are your thoughts on asylum seekers?

History has shown that Australia is a generous and hospitable nation. Nevertheless we have laws to ensure immigration is fair and orderly and so illegal immigrants require careful assessment. We should be working pro-actively with our neighbours to help secure their borders as well as ours to ensure asylum seekers do not risk their lives or that of their family by attempting dangerous boat journeys.
>
> What are your thoughts on public transport?

Get on with it!

> What are your thoughts on renewable energy?

We need to be very careful that we don’t set up competition between staple food crops and fuel sources. This issue has been recognised by the EU and they are reconsidering their position on ethanol based fuels since it will impact heavily on food donations to poorer countries.
I would like to see the re-introduction of a non-means tested solar energy rebate for households

> Do you support or oppose the introduction of the R18+ rating classification for video games?
>
Yes I do – ratings should be set as standard across the spectra of media entertainment, games, videos, magazines and even the internet in order to protect the vulnerable minds of children.

> Do you support or oppose the proposed internet filter?

I support it in principle. I challenge the Government and the news media to produce an unbiased consideration of the internet filter, giving equal exposure to both pros and cons for public discussion. When we know there are young girls being sexually abused in Australian communities due to the combined effects of alcohol and pornography, we need some handles to reduce the accessibility to innapropriate material. There should be no holds barred when it comes to the protection of children and doing something after the statistics are high enough is too late! We all know without a shadow of doubt that you “reap what you sow”, therefore if abhorrent material is freely available via the internet, there will be consequences. As for the so called “secret blacklist”, this can be held by the appropriate media watchdog and be readily available under FOI laws.
>
> Do you support or oppose gay marriage?

We are a free country, free to live and free to choose – however we still have laws for the good of the nation, for order and stability. Our laws do not need to be changed just to suit the personal choices of a very small minority.
>
> What are your thoughts on abortion?

Human life begins at conception. Our modern health system and code of conduct is about the preservation and advancement of human life and it is totally contradictory to permit the termination of unborn babies.
>
> Do you support or oppose the legalisation of voluntary euthanasia?

I oppose euthanasia.
>
> What are your thoughts on stem cell research?

Stem cell research is brilliant, provided we use readily available cord blood or adult stem cells. I believe it is unethical to use unborn foetuses for stem cell research.
>
> What are your thoughts on education?

Stop the dictatorial control of education by State and Federal Governments and let the teachers do their job. If the Government is interested in doing their job, then give teachers what they have been requesting for years – smaller class sizes and increased staffing.

> What are your thoughts on campaign finance disclosure?

Complete transparency is a must.
>
> What are your thoughts on climate change?

The issue of human impact on the environment is too great for us to fully comprehend. If the Copenhagen summit was able to achieve anything useful, it should have produced a plan to reduce the annihilation of the worlds precious rainforests in the Amazon, Congo and Indonesia to name a few. CO2 is a perfectly normal component of our atmosphere and if we manage forests sustainably they will manage CO2 levels for us. I also believe nuclear energy is a viable option as part of a holistic look at power supply that includes renewables and coal.
>
> What are your thoughts on water?

Never ever sell water to a private company, they are only there to maximise profit. Water supply should be as cheap as possible but still meet demand.
>
> Do you support or oppose standing order 50? Need clarification on this question please, I could find no specific or detailed reference for this.
>
> Are there any local issues you are trying to highlight with your campaign?

Health, aged care and housing affordability.
>
> What do you think about the media’s coverage of the election so far?

Way too focussed on the two major party leaders. There are only two electorates in the whole of Australia who vote for Gillard or Abbot and that should be reflected in media concentration. Our local members get minimal coverage and I think it undermines the importance of their role and the worth of the electorate.

Hey, sorry it’s a bit messy – the email program I have at the moment is a bit of a mongrel and is difficult to edit!

Cheers,
