Murgon State School and the environment will benefit from a grant of up to $50,000 to fund solar power panels at the school, through a Liberal National Government’s Solar Schools program, Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said today.

“This funding will be used to install solar power at the school,” Mr Truss said.
The Coalition’s Solar Schools program will provide funding for schools across Australia for the installation of solar power.

Murgon State School will become part of a pilot solar energy program ahead of the commencement of the Solar Schools program from July 2011.

“The Solar Schools program will help to reduce schools energy bills, lower emissions, and also assist in educating students and the community about the importance of renewable energy,” Mr Truss said.

“The Solar Schools program is a simple, practical way to help the environment and support our solar industry, which will have an immediate and effective impact in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The Coalition has allocated $100 million to Solar Schools and its sister initiative, Solar Towns, which will be implemented in eligible small towns.

Grants under the Solar Schools program will be for a maximum of $500,000 each for major solar energy projects that will generate electricity for both on-site use and for feeding back into the grid.

The program will run for four years and support a minimum of 100 school projects. If the Coalition is elected, other schools in Wide Bay will also be eligible to apply for grants.

“The Coalition’s direct action plan on climate change will achieve real reductions in emissions without the need for a carbon tax as Labor and The Greens Parties propose.”
