Nationals – Penny Wong won’t deliver on Labor’s half-baked election promise

Penny Wong won’t deliver on Labor’s half-baked election promise
17-August-2010
Federal MP Luke Hartsuyker today questioned whether Federal Labor will actually deliver on their funding commitment to the Nambucca District Water Supply Bowraville Off-River Water Storage Project.

“Today’s announcement falls well short of what is required to complete this project and there serious questions about whether extreme green Minister Penny Wong would actually deliver on this commitment.

“Ms Wong has already indicated to the Nambucca Shire Council that they would not be getting the funding. Now fours days out from an election the Labor candidate makes an announcement.

“The $10 million is still $8 million short of what is required from the Commonwealth.

“The Nambucca Shire Council and New South Wales Government have both committed $18 million towards the project and it’s essential that $18 million is provided by the Commonwealth for the $54 million project.

“Last week, The Leader of The Nationals Warren Truss and I met with the Nambucca Shire Council to discuss the details of this project.

“The Coalition has a $500 million water security fund which will target areas where water supply is a real issue for local communities.

“Nambucca Shire Council has indicated they will apply for the full $18 million if the Coalition is elected to Government.

“This is a vital piece of the infrastructure for the Nambucca Valley. It is essential to the sustainability of the shire and the future development of the region.

“Only the Coalition has the capacity to deliver the total amount required for this project. The project has my full support.

“Labor’s half-baked announcement still leaves Nambucca ratepayers $8 million short and if Penny Wong is in charge of the department the reality is it will be just another broken election promise.”
