Australian Democrats achieve 1.3% swing in Hume

Greg Butler, Australian Democrats candidate for Hume, has thanked those who cast their vote for him in Saturday’s general election.

Speaking from his property in Murrumbateman, Mr Butler said, “There are obviously some people in the electorate who realised that they did not have to vote for Liberal or Labor, and that the Australian Democrats presented a better alternative. I would like to thank all those who have realised the truth and voted for me, in a 1.3% swing to the Australian Democrats. This is an outstanding result for our local campaign that ran for just four weeks.

“During the election campaign, many people approached me about the need to improve health care, education and transport infrastructure in our region. Despite these problems, most people in Hume decided to continue voting for the parties responsible for the present poor standards of health care, education and transport in our local area.

“We will therefore expect to see a continuing decline in our hospital systems. Mental health care and the provision of services for the aged will not improve. We will not have a national dental health scheme. Our children will continue to attend badly resourced schools. The Lachlan Valley railway will remain closed, and the inland freight link and the very fast train will not be built. Our local roads will continue to deteriorate. The Barton Highway will not be duplicated. Our local government councils will go deeper into debt.

“But this need not happen. On behalf of those in Hume who voted for me and put their trust in me, I have decided to ask the Australian Democrats to re-endorse me as their candidate for Hume. I will continue to campaign on behalf of the people of Hume to force our sitting member, and whoever is in Government, to get off their backsides and do the work required to bring improvements to Hume.

“I believe it is prudent to seek preselection now. I expect the voters of Hume to go to the polls again within 18 months, either in a general double dissolution election, or in a by-election. The Australian Democrats intend to have a much higher profile for the next election, “ Mr Butler concluded.

From practically nothing to 1.4% isn’t that crash hot. You did beat Ivan Milat’s sister in law though, so bully for you.

  • I wonder Chris if you’ve ever had the guts to run as a candidate, or just an armchair critic slinging negativity at those who are participating in what they perceive as the betterment of our lot? Quite a lot of your comments come across as peevish.

  • Chris

I have, actually. Assuming you voted in the last SA election, I was on your LC ballot.

  • David

    You mean this election?

The one where absolute political newcomers with no established brand, zero funding and no experience polled ~200 votes short of an established, experienced party with brand recognition (the Australian Democrats) in the upper house, and actually beat them by the same kind of margin (~200 votes) in the one lower house seat (Croydon) they both contested?

Was it that one you ran in, Chris?

You know, just so we all know which election and which parties we’re talking about.

    Ah David, that was great.

  • Chris

I am in awe of your subtlety, Dave.

  • I look forward to the day that Chris faces some accountability, Lol

Accountability for… all of that free speech I’ve been doing?
    Or that dastardly citation?

Or for the common sense where, for example, I point out that invoking ‘accountability’ for someone who has no authority makes no sense and just reinforces the idea that you pull political sounding words out of a hat at random?
