CHURCH VILIFIES SENATE CANDIDATE PETER PYKE
OVER NO OPPOSITION TO GAY MARRIAGE
Senate candidate for Queensland and former-MP Peter Pyke today revealed he has been attacked in an email by the Granite Belt Baptist Church because he does not oppose gay marriage.
In an unsolicited email to Senate candidate Peter Pyke, the Granite Belt Baptist Church has accused Mr Pyke of being ‘pro-sodomite”.
The email is reprinted below.
Mr Pyke is a former Queensland police officer with a reputation as an anti-corruption campaigner. He has taken a stand on gay marriage which is published on the website: www.republicandemocrats.org.au
Essentially, Senate candidate Peter Pyke says he believes the fundamental issue in gay marriage is that of equality, with a further question about how appropriate is it for the church to intrude into state issues?
Peter Pyke says he doesn’t believe there are any second-class citizens in Australia, gay or straight. The Senate candidate believes all citizens have equal rights, which includes marriage.
He says Australia is fundamentally a secular society and it sets a dangerous standard for any religion to be able to dictate to the state.
Peter Pyke’s policy published on the website says he “recognises the diversity of relationships Australians engage in and sees no reason to oppose gay marriage.”
Mr Pyke says he thinks the Granite Belt Baptist Church has stepped over the line by vilifying him as a ‘pro-sodomite’ and is concerned about the author of the email being the spiritual leader of a religious community who preaches intolerance.
Peter Pyke says he wants Australia to be a tolerant country which can respect the rights of all citizens and sees the issue of gay marriage as an important step towards that standard.
