Independent Peter Pyke (QLD) – PETER PYKE SENATE CANDIDATE ASKS YOU TO VOTE BELOW THE LINE

PETER PYKE SENATE CANDIDATE FOR QUEENSLAND
Press Release: 17 August 2010
PETER PYKE SENATE CANDIDATE ASKS YOU TO VOTE BELOW THE LINE

‘Challenging’, is how Peter Pyke, Senate candidate for Queensland and former-MP describes the Senate ballot paper for Queensland in next Saturday’s Federal Election. There are 60 choices of candidates or parties in the ‘below the line’ category on the ballot paper and to vote this way voters need to put a number one in the box next to the candidate or party of their first choice, then a number two against their second preference and so on, until all 60 boxes have been correctly numbered.

Make a mistake and you must ask for another ballot paper, Peter Pyke says. But why take this trouble when all a voter needs to do is to simply put the number one against the party of your choice in the ‘above the line’ category?

Well, you may want to vote for a candidate or party but not be happy about the way that candidate or party’s preferences have been allocated, Peter Pyke says. Voting below the line allows you to give your preferred candidate or party your first preference then make your own choices about where your important other preferences are allocated. This voids the backroom deals between some parties like the deal done between the Greens and the ALP which has upset many.

The outcome of this Federal Election is likely to be close in the House of Representatives but may result in the Greens holding the balance of power in our Senate. While some may welcome that, Peter Pyke says he doesn’t and that’s why he’s put himself forward as a Senate candidate for Queensland. If the Greens gain the balance of power in the Senate, Peter Pyke says they will be able to hold our nation to ransom and impose their demands on whatever government is elected, Labor or Liberal.

The Greens have already staged protests which have delayed coal trains in Queensland and have a stated agenda to close down our vital coal industry and our coal-fired power stations. Given the balance of power, Peter Pyke says, the Greens will continue to take water out of the hands of irrigators, to displace farmers and their families off their farms and to damage the social fabric of productive regional communities. Make no mistake about it, he says, the Greens’ intentions are to put in place their own agenda, not just to responsibly moderate the legislation and policy of a duly-elected Federal Government as Peter Pyke says he can be trusted to do if elected to the Senate.

Peter Pyke is a well-known Queenslander who can be trusted and who bridges city-and-country. Last week Peter proposed a Murray-Darling Headwaters Scheme to put more water into our major rivers and to keep farmers on farms and increase agriculture while making river systems sustainable.

Before you vote this weekend, Peter Pyke asks you to think carefully about the way you will vote in the Senate. Your choice may put the Greens in power, or you can safely entrust Peter Pyke with that key role. Peter Pyke will not allow our coal industry to be destroyed and he will support all Queenslanders including farmers and our regional communities.

Peter, every political party’s intentions are to put in place their own agendas…

That’s why we have elections; to determine which agenda we want to see enacted over the next term of government.
