Beyond being impractical and dangerous, the ‘turn back the boats’ thing is utter bullshit. Denying people the right to request asylum, even sending them back to whence they came without consideration is a blatant violation of Australia’s international obligations. Not to mention we’re hardly pulling our weight relative to other nations receiving refugees.
This is the most irritating subject of the whole election for me. I for one have empathy for other human beings, and I am happy to share the country that I live in if it helps people in need.
I particularly love the bullshit spin from Abbott of reducing immigration at the same time as saying “stop the boats”.
If you reduce legal immigration it is only natural that illegal immigration will increase.
