The results of a Newspoll survey on the Victorian government’s proposed ban on bongs, show widespread skepticism about the move.
The government’s stated objective in introducing legislation to ban bongs was to try and stop young people from smoking marihuana. The poll, commissioned by the Eros Association and run last weekend showed that a large majority of Victorians (72%) thought the legislation would not stop young people from smoking marihuana. A minority of 23% thought it would.
Eros Association CEO and Sex Party President, Fiona Patten, said that the proposed legislation was also racist, in that it banned bongs used by young Caucasions and water pipes traditionally used by Chinese but exempted hookahs used by those of middle eastern descent.
“If Andrew Bolt’s statements about race are illegal then this Bill surely is as well”, she said. “How can you send Chinese and Caucasian Australians to jail for selling and displaying bongs and then exempt Lebanese and Egyptian Australians from selling and displaying their version of a bong?”
She called on Andrew Bolt to comment on the issue.
Of those that did not believe the legislation would have any effect, the 18-34 age group were most vocal with 80% agreeing but even in the over 50 age group, a large percentage (64%) also agreed that banning bongs would do nothing to bring down marihuana usage.
Ms Patten said that bongs, hookahs and traditional water pipes should all be sold from age-restricted premises. She said that if the legislation was passed, she would survey Victorians about marihuana usage in the months prior to the next State election. “I think we will find that usage rates will probably have escalated”, she said. “This will show that, against public opinion, the government wasted taxpayer’s money just to show they were ‘tough on drugs’. She asked the Premier if he would now ban cigarette papers in the state of Victoria because these were by far the most popular way of smoking marihuana. “A far more effective Bill would be to restrict the sale of all smoking utensils, pipes, cigarettes and cigarette papers to adults only venues such as tobacconists, pubs and adult shops.
She said that banning bongs would force tens of thousands of young Victorians to smoke cannabis through garden hoses and plastic orange juice bottles with all the deleterious health aspects that plastic vapors in the lungs could bring.
“When in government, the ALP voted against this Bill when it was initially brought on by the DLP. They cited the deleterious effects of smoking substances through plastic as opposed to glass or ceramic or wood. The Greens appear unlikely to move to put it to a Committee. The Sex Party will fight this decision on its own.”

Experten rechnen mit gleich mehreren schweren Sturmfluten. [b]Uhren verkaufen[/b] Dass Ebbe und Flut zur Zeit besonders stark sind, habe mit dem Neumond zu tun, so Dierkes auf WDR 2: “Den hatten wir vor ein paar Tagen, da waren Sonne, Mond und Erde genau in einer Linie – der Mond in der Mitte -, und diese Konstellation, die verändert die Wirkung von Ebbe und Flut.” Neben dem Mond habe auch die Sonne eine bestimmte Anziehungskraft und verstärke die Wirkung des Mondes auf die Gezeiten.
Wenn Sonne und Mond beim Neumond hintereinanderstünden, fielen die Gezeiten stärker aus. “Man nennt das eine Springtide: Das Wasser steigt also etwas mehr an bei Flut und geht auch etwas mehr zurück bei Ebbe.” Genau so eine Springtide werde jetzt mit ein paar Tagen Verzögerung kommen. “Da ist dann einmal die Sturmflut, bei der dieser starke Wind das Wasser vor sich hertreibt und am Ende gegen die Küsten peitscht, und dann ist da noch die Springtide, die verstärkte Ebbe und Flut, also eine wirklich ungünstige Kombination.”

Welchen Effekt das genau haben wird, wisse man noch nicht, so Dierkes: “Bei Springtiden ändert sich der Wasserspiegel normalerweise nur um ein paar Zentimeter, da ist dieser Unterschied zur normalen Ebbe und Flut kaum sichtbar.” Zusammen mit dem starken Wind könne das aber ganz anders aussehen. Wie viel das am Ende ausmache, müsse man abwarten.
“Klar ist aber: Wenn der Wasserspiegel steigt, dann steckt da in erster Linie der Wind hinter und nicht der Mond.” Aber auch die Topographie der Küste spielt eine Rolle: Besonders stark fallen Sturmfluten an trichterförmigen Meeresbuchten oder Flussmündungen aus.

Große Preise auf kleinen Schildern. Das Geschäft mit der Zeit ist so konservativ wie sie selbst. Eine Sekunde ist eine Sekunde ist eine Sekunde. Tick, tack. Möglicherweise ist das auch der Grund, warum die Stellung der Zeiger nie voneinander abweicht. Es ist immer zehn nach zehn. Im Schaufenster, auf Plakatwänden, in Hochglanzmagazinen. Zehn nach zehn ist die Missionarsstellung der Armbanduhren. Aber warum eigentlich?

Damals legte die japanische Uhrenfirma Seiko fest, dass ihre Produkte auf Abbildungen immer zehn Uhr, acht Minuten und 42 Sekunden anzeigen sollten. Die anderen Hersteller haben sich dieser Entwicklung vermutlich einfach angepasst. Erforscht hat das Florian Coulmas, ein Wissenschaftler am deutschen Institut für Japanologie in Tokio. Coulmas zu erreichen ist gar nicht so leicht, denn wenn es bei ihm zehn nach zehn ist, ist es in Deutschland mitten in der Nacht.
Symmetrie sei jedenfalls nicht der Grund für die gleiche Taktung, meint Coulmas, denn dann müssten die Zeiger zehn Uhr, neun Minuten und 13 Sekunden anzeigen. Die Erklärung liege vielmehr im Wesen der Uhr selbst: Sie soll Einheitlichkeit vermitteln. Der Uhrenvergleich, früher ein Ritual in jedem guten Gangsterfilm, ist längst überholt – heute denken wir größer, orientieren uns an der Weltzeituhr. Kabul, New York, Reykjavík. Zehn nach zehn, vielleicht heißt das: Wir sind alle gleich.
Es mag aber auch sein, dass die Zeigerstellung kulturell bedingt ist. Bestimmten Uhrzeiten wird eine Bedeutung beigemessen, die für viele Menschen gültig ist. Elf Uhr elf? Karneval. 20 Uhr? „Tagesschau“. Fünf vor zwölf? Politikersprech. Und, vermutlich besonders fest in den Köpfen verankert: Morgens, halb zehn in Deutschland. Zeit für ein Knoppers. Dann ist ein Stückchen geschafft, säuselt der Sänger im Werbespot, während die Frisörin, der Anzugträger und der Bauarbeiter ihre Arbeit niederlegen. Seit ein paar Jahren wirbt Knoppers mit einem neuen Slogan: Mein halb zehn ist jetzt halb zwölf. Möglicherweise eine Reaktion auf das Ende des Nine-to-five-Arbeitstags, denn prekäre Kreative stehen um halb zehn gerade erst auf.
Andere Uhrzeiten sehen komisch aus. Komisch, oder?
Martina Dold freut sich um diese Zeit auf den ersten Kaffee. Sie ist Uhrenmacherin bei Askania in Berlin und findet zehn nach zehn eine schöne Zeit: „Da hat man schon einen Plan vom Tag.“ In ihrem Geschäft haben sie zwar auch schon andere Zeigerstellungen ausprobiert, aber die Kunden hätten sich jedes Mal gewundert: „Irgendwas stimmt da nicht.“ Auch Dold findet, dass andere Uhrzeiten komisch aussehen, so, als sei die Uhr stehen geblieben. Also wirklich alles nur eine willkürliche Tradition der Uhrenindustrie?
Keinesfalls. Schauen Sie sich das Bild links vom Text noch einmal genauer an. Sehen Sie die beiden Zeiger, die von der Mitte aus optimistisch nach oben zeigen, Richtung Himmel? Ein Symbol für ein Smiley, sagen Uhrmacherin Dold und Japanologe Coulmas. Eine Uhr auf 20 vor vier sehe dagegen einfach nur traurig aus. Das ist also das Geheimnis: Mach es wie die Sonnenuhr, zähl die heit’ren Stunden nur. Die Uhr lächelt uns an, verführt uns zum Kauf, flirtet vielleicht gar mit uns.
Martina Dold ist sich jedenfalls sicher, dass die Zeiger auf zehn nach zehn das Verkaufsverhalten positiv beeinflussen. Psychologiestudenten aus Jena haben das getestet: 115 Versuchspersonen sahen sich die lächelnden und die traurigen – in der Versuchsreihe „Grumpy“ genannten – Uhren an. Eine Vorliebe konnte nicht nachgewiesen werden: „Der praktische Nutzen einer Zeigermanipulation für den Uhrenverkauf wird somit von den vorliegenden Ergebnissen in Frage gestellt.“
Aber vielleicht irren Uhrenspezialisten und Wissenschaftler, vielleicht geht es gar nicht ums Gesicht. Im Film „Vorsicht Sehnsucht“ von Alain Resnais sind die Uhrzeiger ein Symbol für Frauenbeine. Die wann genau eine ziemlich eindeutige Position einnehmen? Eben.

I just had to flush the first half and come back and play the second half.” Georgia Tech began the game with a 10-26 ACC record under third-year coach Brian Gregory, but the Jackets led by as much as 13 in the first half on Marcus Georges-Hunt’s 3 from the left key. Notre Dame came within two in the first on Demetrius Jackson’s layup at the 8:01 mark and on Steve Vasturia’s with 1:17 remaining, but Golden hit a pair of free throws to make it a four-point lead at intermission. The Irish, playing just their second away game of the season on an opponent’s home court, trailed by 15 midway through the second half on Golden’s runner from the baseline at the 13:59 mark. Chris Bolden hit a 3 from the left side on the ensuing possession, and Quinton Stephens’ jumper from the top of the key made it 62-57 at the 5:40 mark. Notre Dame, which began its ACC era with a win over then-No. 7 Duke last week, was coming off a seven-point loss to North Carolina State. The Irish didn’t take their first lead of the game until Pat Connaughton’s jumper made it 64-62 with 3:56 remaining. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey thought his team played hard, but was undone by poor starts in both halves. “When you’re digging out of those holes,” Brey said, “it’s exhausting and sometimes you almost don’t deserve to win the game because how of you started the game and how you started the half.” Gregory was pleased with how well Miller defended Sherman. The Jackets will need a similar performance to improve their chances of winning at Notre Dame late next month. “Garrick is a little more offensively aggressive and I think Daniel might have an overall better feel on the defensive side of the ball,” Gregory said. “Those are two fifth-year guys that have made themselves into great players. That was a good battle.”

Really, 23 days? They would have been charged, tried and weighed off almost before the first tweet had arrived from France explaining la quenelle and its spiteful message. The FA likes its racist bogeymen to be black and white. Anelka’s behaviour is more subtle, more layered, which is why its influence is insidious and its eradication requires greater spine. And that has never been the FA’s strongest suit.
Meanwhile, in France, the comedian who popularised la quenelle, Dieudonne M’Bala M’Bala — who has 10 convictions, mostly for incitement to hatred about Jews, so let’s not pretend that Anelka did not know what he was doing — has been banned from performing a show in Nantes.
Manuel Valls, interior minister, said Dieudonne’s act was no longer artistic or comic but resembled an extreme political rally and was cancelled on the grounds it could lead to criminal offences. There is no precedent for this in France and government intervention has divided society. As disappointed fans trudged away, who did they blame? The Jews. The FA are in a quandary because Anelka said his quenelle gesture was simply in support of his comedian friend and because other footballers have been caught on camera performing it; Samir Nasri, for instance, who parroted Dieudonne’s defence that it was not anti-Semitic, but a statement of rebellion against the system. So exactly what system is Nasri taking against? He draws his wages from Manchester City, owned by Sheik Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who sits on the International Petroleum Investment Company, has 32 per cent of Virgin Galactic, 9.1 per cent of Daimler and helped set up Sky News Arabia with those noted anti-establishment figures, BSkyB. In 2008, the Abu Dhabi Investment Company of which Sheik Mansour is a board member bought 90 per cent of a quite gorgeous Art Deco monument to American capitalism, the Chrysler Building.
Maybe it is the system of contracts that Nasri is rebelling against, considering he has never been too keen on honouring his once a richer guy comes along.
Or maybe he hasn’t a clue and is barely cognisant that the system that Dieudonne rails against is the one in which the people are suppressed by a global conspiracy of big business orchestrated by men with big noses. The real problem the FA seem to have is that, as a black Muslim, Anelka is not the standard race offender.
Witness the way Michael Johnson’s aversion to homosexuality was handled with kid gloves by the FA’s inclusion advisory board. Having appointed the former Birmingham player to its panel, the FA then discovered that Johnson, as a practising Christian, had referred to homosexuality as ‘detestable unto the Lord’ in a 2012 interview.
Following his resignation, chair and FA board member Heather Rabbatts chose not to admit a giant personal blunder or even condemn Johnson, but said instead that he still had ‘vital expertise’, described his decision to step down as ‘unfortunate’ and said he would still be consulted on a regular basis. Well, you can’t say she’s not inclusive.

It is very easy to nail white guys for using the N-word, or produce a fresh round of T-shirts denouncing homophobia, but what if the FA’s appointed quenelle expert starts introducing Palestine or freedom-of-expression issues to the debate? That’s when an organisation needs to see through the fog.
Police are already investigating anti-Semitic messages posted after Arsenal’s FA Cup match with Tottenham. Society is not so civilised that it cannot be influenced by some pretty base rhetoric. Why does Anelka’s action matter? Well, imagine if, instead of calling Patrice Evra some pretty horrid names, Suarez had instead chosen to unveil a vest with the message ‘White Power’ each time he scored.
Right there is the difference: a contained exchange of words, unpleasant but going nowhere, versus a message intended to reach and influence a wider audience. If Hitler had simply walked the street shouting abuse at Jews, he would be remembered as a very nasty piece of work in the city of Munich, but probably not as the architect of a European holocaust. It is when you seek to amplify a divisive message, to broadcast it, to inspire similar thoughts and actions in others, that the narrative takes its most sinister turn.
And for that piece of unsolicited, inexpert advice, Mr Dyke, no charge. Now please do your job.

Moral monstering of Smalling While reading this, you may be dressed as a suicide bomber. And there really is no problem with that providing you are a) not about to commit an act of murderous barbarism, or b) in the privacy of your own home. Obviously, don’t act on maniacal impulses or take to the streets. Just walking around in public dressed as a terrorist would make it a different issue entirely. Our security forces are stretched enough already without cutting-edge costumiers testing their resources to the limit. In private, however, be what you want to be, outfit-wise. A policeman, a pirate, a milk maid, Saddam Hussein’s little brother. It’s a free country.
Close the door and Mr Benn it up. This brings us to Chris Smalling of Manchester United, who was widely castigated last week for dressing as a disciple of Al Qaeda at a fancy dress party held at his home. Actually, it was a little more complex than that. Smalling’s full outfit included empty bottles of the liqueur digestif Jagermeister, cans of Red Bull, an Arab headdress, a mock circuit board and cables.
He was — wait for it — a Jagerbomber. (For those with more traditional beverage preferences, a Jagerbomb is a mixed drink made by dropping a shot of Jagermeister into a glass of Red Bull.) So that’s quite a good joke, actually. A visual pun, and some pretty nifty word play. Smalling was bright enough to earn a place at Loughborough University reading financial economics before his present profession intervened, and it shows. Footballers’ parties are well known for dubious taste but comically edgy flights of fantasy not so much.
And whether you are amused or not, Smalling never intended his gag to pass beyond the four walls of a private address. Somehow it did — and as we live in the age of unending moral judgment, Smalling was found wanting.
The victims of terror, or their families, were wheeled out to condemn his act as crass and hurtful, as if any insult could make worse their particular injury and Smalling was branded the stereotypical thick footballer, which he is plainly not. It is a curse, this prurience, this constant desire for outrage over innocent intentions. You are entitled, in your own house, to dress how you like.
Just don’t blow up a train.

Big mistake to make Fowler the No 1 villain Robbie Fowler is now the poster boy for homophobia in football. Each time the subject is raised, he is wheeled out due to his very public taunting of Graeme Le Saux during a match between Liverpool and Chelsea in 1999. The same reports often contrast Fowler negatively with David Beckham’s status as a gay icon. It is widely agreed that Beckham’s approach, including posing for the cover of Attitude magazine, was ground-breaking. Worth remembering, then, that Le Saux also claimed being abused with homophobic language by Paul Ince, Robbie Savage and, yes, on an isolated occasion, Beckham, too. So this is not about good guys and bad guys, picking out one individual like Fowler, who clearly regrets his behaviour, and making him the villain for all time. Competitive people attempt to gain a psychological advantage. There are, no doubt, some who are also prejudiced, but there are others who will merely use whatever they can if it is to their benefit. That unfeeling ruthlessness is what must change and it is not merely an issue for the gay community.

Either way, it is widely agreed that volunteer coaches in athletics are deserting en masse. Hence the anger directed at Niels de Vos, chief executive of UK Athletics, whose pay soared by £93,788 in 2012-13. ‘How can De Vos receive a 55 per cent rise when we are losing voluntary coaches every year due to a lack of funds?’ asked Goldie Sayers, the British javelin record-holder. Simple, really. UK Athletics is no longer about the grassroots and hasn’t been for some time. It is concerned with elite performance and if this means it has to import its athletes from the Caribbean or the lesser ranks of USA Track and Field, it really doesn’t care. No volunteer coaches were required to produce Tiffany Porter or Delano Williams and if this new breed of British athlete lands medals, the end justifies the means.

De Vos and his allies did not care enough to protect grassroots British competitors from being usurped, so why should they care for anonymous volunteers? The chief executive’s rewards are now linked to a chilling short-term mentality and the pity is so many stood idle and watched this unfold. Now it is too late.

Interesting that you dismiss Suarez’s racial abuse as ‘unpleasant but going nowhere’ yet imply Anelka’s actions were so much worse. I am a teacher and I can assure you that kids idolise these footballers and want to imitate them to the nth degree. Fair enough no footballer asked to be a role model but nevertheless they are to millions of impressionable kids who believe ‘that’s what …Suarez, Rooney, Terry etc do so thats what i will do’ (this applies equally to diving and swearing – which is why Pardew deserves a ban).
Anelka’s actions were cowardly and crass but lets not use that to downgrade what Suarez and Terry did!
PS: Why the need to mention Anelka’s religion? – as witnessed around the globe any religion is perfectly capable of racism

Terry was found not guilty and Suarez used a term thats not offensive in his own country so stop using Suarez and Terry as red herrings, Anelka knew exactly what he was doing and it probably stems from his time in Bolton were he became “religious”.

Exactly who decided that Anelka’s gesture and Smalling’s costume are unacceptable and on what grounds? If we carry on like this we can kiss goodbye to free speech and all the other freedoms which come with it. It seems to me that this tide of intolerance is being driven by the media.

Those of us involved in grass roots athletics predicted back in 2008 there would be no Olympic legacy and that the burden of funding the sport would fall on us not on overpaid administrators who are not involved in the sport at our level. It gives us no pleasure to know we were right.
As for Anelka I had no idea what was going on until it was played up by the media (as was Suarez) but I am of the opinion that Suarez would have been banned for the rest of the season and Terry would have got away with it ‘in the context of the game’. Don’t forget Mark Bosnich was fined and censured for giving a Nazi salute at a Tottenham match. A similar approach would be appropriate in this case. I doubt Anelka will repeat the offence.

Clearly Anelkas actions were unacceptable. Just because no one knew what it meant does not make it any less detestable. If anything it makes it even more cynical and more deserving of punishment. Throw the kitchen sink at him. It would be a fitting book end to the career of a talented sportsman, whos career has been littered with examples of poor judgement and bad decision making.

Most definitely anti semitic and unacceptable – no different than if he had done a nazi salute – someones own personal views are their own but bringing it into sport has to be dealt with strongly.
If the quenelle had a different meaning such as a code for the world wide implementation of sharia law I am certain that many of the commentators currently condoning his actions would feel very differently. However it seems that abuse aimed at jews is considered acceptable !

And looks a lot like a G-Shock, even if it’s not branded as one. The Sports Gear lasts an impressive two years on a single battery and has 100-meter water resistance, but no G-Shock-style shock resistance. Even though it looks like a G-Shock, the display is subtly different: many readouts turn into data from paired fitness apps, and the watch feels better attuned to being a smartwatch than the G-Shocks were. But it’s a conservative design: the display isn’t capable of full higher-resolution text and graphics like a Pebble . Still, the deeper hooks in the connected supported apps thus far are impressive: the Wahoo Fitness app supports pairing with a heart rate monitor, which can display on the Sports Gear screen. The Abvio apps permit complete customization of all the buttons on the watch, letting you choose up to 120 different stats to push to your watch and how to access them. It’s a nice added step for Casio, but I really wish this one had a pedometer. Technically, it could: there’s an accelerometer. Maybe next time. For now, it’s a conservative but subtly powerful next smart step for Casio.

Students in a New Hampshire district had to find something else to do when the school board took dodgeball off the curriculum in March of this year.
Despite the fact that the balls used are usually very soft, the intent was to remove so-called ‘human target’ games from the physical education curriculum.

Brampton, Ont.’s Earnscliffe Senior Public School enacted a ‘no loving, no shoving’ policy in an attempt to make the school safe.

Hundreds of schools back in 2008 in the United Kingdom banned their teachers from marking in red ink in case it upset the students.
The opposition to red ink seemed to be a world-wide trend with guidelines to schools in Queensland, Australia, also warning against red ink.

Students at St. Joseph Catholic High School in Ottawa were told in 2011 that tight-fitting yoga pants did not meet the uniform code and banned students from wearing them.

In 2010 a product that gained a huge following with youth were brightly coloured rubber wristbands called ‘ Silly Bandz .’

In 2011 a Kelowna middle school banned students from wearing breast cancer awareness wristbands because they claimed the brightly coloured bracelets were inappropriate. They were part of a breast cancer awareness campaign by Keep A Breast Canada and had ‘I [love] boobies!’ printed on them.

The administration at Coghlan Fundamental Elementary School says the policy is necessary because students have been injured from "hands-on play" and a recent letter to parents tells them ‘we will have a zero-tolerance policy with regards to hands-on play.’
Children who don’t follow the new rule may be sent to the office or won’t get to play during recess.

The program manager of Fremont-based TransVision, which provides health services to transgender clients, spent much of the night tossing and turning, so when one of her former employees, Terry Washington, called her cellphone just before 7 a.m., she didn’t pick up. When more calls started coming in, Woods knew something was wrong. Washington’s voicemail delivered one of the most shocking pieces of news she had ever received in her long history as a transgender advocate in the East Bay.

By 7:40 a.m., Woods, who is also a transgender woman, was at the crime scene taking photos of Martell’s body, covered with a blanket, lying on the street.
[b][url=http://www.tiffanyandc.com]tiffany jewelry outlet[/url][/b] “I heard the gunshots, ran over to the car, and see her there taking her last breath,” recalled Kayla Moore, a transgender woman who happened to be in the area — a popular hangout for the trans community — at the time. “I’d never experienced somebody dying in front of me.” A week later, Moore, who was then involved in sex work, had an emotional breakdown and decided to get off the streets. She now works for TransVision.
[b]cheap tiffany & co[/b] It’s unclear who killed Martell or why. Oakland police spokesperson Johnna Watson said the department is committed to finding Martell’s killer. “We do not want this case to go forgotten,” she said.
But some feel it already has. Several friends of Martell believe her murder was a blatant hate crime, because such crimes are all too familiar for transgender people, who often experience violence and discrimination because of the simple fact that their gender identity and expression do not match the ones assigned to them at birth. Even in the liberal East Bay.
“We prepare for death,” said Ms. Will, an Oakland transgender woman and longtime Bay Area activist. “We all wonder when it will be our turn.”
Transgender rights advocates in Oakland will continue to call for justice for Martell on November 20, which marks the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, the highest-profile event for the trans community in the country — and a depressing reminder of the grim challenge facing this population. Since Martell’s death, there have been several attention-grabbing local cases of violence involving transgender victims, notably the controversial death of a trans woman, Kayla Moore (no relation to the aforementioned Kayla Moore), while in Berkeley Police Department custody, and, recently, the case of a gender-nonconforming (or “agender”) teenager, Sasha Fleischman, whose skirt was lit on fire while on a bus in Oakland.
Although data on hate crimes against transgender people are hard to come by, studies show that transgender people are disproportionately victims of violence compared to the broader LGBT community. A 2012 report by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, which collects data from LGBT organizations around the country, found that the problem is particularly acute for transgender women of color. Around half of all victims of anti-LGBTQ homicides in 2012 were transgender, and all of them were women of color. (This is the first year that law enforcement agencies will be reporting hate crimes based on gender identity to the FBI, and data won’t be published until 2014.) According to Transgender Europe’s Trans Murder Monitoring project, there have been 238 killings of trans people in the last 12 months worldwide — sixteen in the United States. The global count has been climbing overall since 2009.
While transgender people face widespread mistreatment — they were 1.67 times as likely to experience threats and intimidation compared to LGBTQ non-transgender survivors and victims of violence in the 2012 anti-violence report — studies and interviews with advocates show that trans women are particularly vulnerable. They face higher rates of discrimination, violence, sexual assault, and poverty. Some are victimized by male partners because they are ashamed of being with them. Others deal with violence associated with sex work. For the women who struggle daily with abuse and harassment — from strangers, boyfriends, and, in some cases, police — it can feel as if society has accepted this reality as the norm, or at least is choosing to ignore it.
“We’re expendable,” said Breonna McCree, an African-American transgender woman and close friend of Martell. “We expect there will be no justice.” McCree, who is a public health specialist, said that when she used to be a sex worker she and other women had the traumatizing task on multiple occasions of helping police identify transgender friends who had been murdered. “[Violence] becomes part of everyday life.”
Just one week before her death, Martell was sitting in the living room of McCree’s Oakland apartment, talking about the miracle of their survival thus far.
Martell, McCree recalled, told her, “‘I’m surprised someone hasn’t killed me off yet.’”
On a chilly Friday evening earlier this month, Kayla Moore and two co-workers from TransVision parked their cars at the dimly lit corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 16th Street, just outside of the hustle of downtown Oakland. It was after 10 p.m. and the November First Fridays street festival had ended, but for many bars and clubs, the night was just beginning — as was their night shift. They were there to reach out to sex workers, offering them condoms and handing out fliers.

Shares of the leading radio streaming service soared 6.7% to $31.43, after the investment firm said advertising growth and the company’s strength in the face of Apple ‘s ( AAPL ) iTunes Radio threat were encouraging.

Rdio and iHeart music discovery engines are powered by Echo Nest, which groups by artist or genre, making for a less-intuitive, more-generic experience.
Though Apple has stayed mum on its music discovery engine, iTunes Radio doesn’t have the brand loyalty of Pandora . While investors had jitters when Apple stomped into the space, Pandora has already made fingerprints on users’ iPhones and iPads, its app ready to launch and easy to use.
TheStreet Ratings team strikes a more pessimistic tone, however, rating Pandora as a “sell” with a ratings score of D. The team has this to say about their recommendation:
“We rate Pandora Media INC (P) a SELL. This is driven by some concerns, which we believe should have a greater impact than any strengths, and could make it more difficult for investors to achieve positive results compared to most of the stocks we cover. The company’s weaknesses can be seen in multiple areas, such as its deteriorating net income, disappointing return on equity, weak operating cash flow and feeble growth in its earnings per share.”
Highlights from the analysis by TheStreet Ratings Team goes as follows:
The company, on the basis of change in net income from the same quarter one year ago, has significantly underperformed when compared to that of the S&P 500 and the Internet Software & Services industry. The net income has significantly decreased by 43.8% when compared to the same quarter one year ago, falling from -$5.42 million to -$7.79 million.
Return on equity has greatly decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness within the corporation. Compared to other companies in the Internet Software & Services industry and the overall market, Pandora Media INC’s return on equity significantly trails that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.
Net operating cash flow has significantly decreased to -$2.32 million or 181.48% when compared to the same quarter last year. In addition, when comparing to the industry average, the firm’s growth rate is much lower.
Pandora Media INC’s earnings per share declined by 33.3% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has reported a trend of declining earnings per share over the past two years. However, the consensus estimate suggests that this trend should reverse in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, Pandora Media INC reported poor results of -23 cents a share vs. -10 cents a share in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings (3 cents vs. -23 cents).
42.71% is the gross profit margin for Pandora Media INC which we consider to be strong. It has increased from the same quarter the previous year. Regardless of the strong results of the gross profit margin, the net profit margin of -4.94% is in-line with the industry average.

ATLANTA — Trae Golden scored 20 points, Daniel Miller added 10 points and 13 rebounds and Georgia Tech beat Notre Dame 74-69 on Saturday. I just had to flush the first half and come back and play the second half.” Georgia Tech began the game with a 10-26 ACC record under third-year coach Brian Gregory, but the Jackets led by as much as 13 in the first half on Marcus Georges-Hunt’s 3 from the left key. Notre Dame came within two in the first on Demetrius Jackson’s layup at the 8:01 mark and on Steve Vasturia’s with 1:17 remaining, but Golden hit a pair of free throws to make it a four-point lead at intermission. The Irish, playing just their second away game of the season on an opponent’s home court, trailed by 15 midway through the second half on Golden’s runner from the baseline at the 13:59 mark. Chris Bolden hit a 3 from the left side on the ensuing possession, and Quinton Stephens’ jumper from the top of the key made it 62-57 at the 5:40 mark. Notre Dame, which began its ACC era with a win over then-No. 7 Duke last week, was coming off a seven-point loss to North Carolina State. The Irish didn’t take their first lead of the game until Pat Connaughton’s jumper made it 64-62 with 3:56 remaining. Notre Dame coach Mike Brey thought his team played hard, but was undone by poor starts in both halves. “When you’re digging out of those holes,” Brey said, “it’s exhausting and sometimes you almost don’t deserve to win the game because how of you started the game and how you started the half.” Gregory was pleased with how well Miller defended Sherman. The Jackets will need a similar performance to improve their chances of winning at Notre Dame late next month. “Garrick is a little more offensively aggressive and I think Daniel might have an overall better feel on the defensive side of the ball,” Gregory said. “Those are two fifth-year guys that have made themselves into great players. That was a good battle.”
