Solution to coal ship queues: no new coalmines

Commenting on the impacts of the coal industry in the Hunter and Australia’s responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Greens Senator for NSW Lee Rhiannon has called for the proposed T4 coal loader to be cancelled not postponed (Newcastle Herald, 25/06/12 http://tiny.cc/buofgw)

“The coal and shipping companies executives who are pushing for a fast turnaround of coal exports out of Newcastle Port are ignoring the serious health and environmental impacts the coal industry is having on the people of the Hunter,” Senator Rhiannon said.

“Shipping Australia chief executive Llew Russell should take note of the burden coal exports are already imposing on locals before he pushes for coal export expansion out of Newcastle Port.

“The way coal and shipping companies are colluding is another example of these companies working to boost their company profits with no regard to community well-being and the environment.

“I am yet to hear of any CEOs living near the coal port or the coal rail line.

“Coal dust is already a health issue and if the T4 coal loader goes ahead at least 40 more coal trains would travel through Newcastle and Maitland every day.

“The greenhouse gas emissions are huge. If T4 is built, an additional 120 million tonnes of coal would shipped out of Newcastle each year. When burned this coal would generate more than 280 million tonnes of greenhouse gases.

“This latest push to keep the T4 on track comes just a month after it was revealed that the Port Waratah Coal Service has not provided the public or the ACCC with any evidence that they have the 176.6 million tonnes per year in take or pay contracts that is required before T4 is built.

“This was revealed by the competition commission when I questioned ACCC representatives in Senate Estimates.

“Now that the economic justification for T4 has been thrown into question, the shipping and coal industry are stepping up their public pressure to get their way,” Senator Rhiannon said.

    Murdoch visits downtown Guelph to solve latest mystery

    GUELPH— Gripping tightly to a black and white photo of Yannick Bisson, the star of the television series Murdoch Mysteries, Kym Castell-Prime is shaking with excitement as the man in the photo signs his name to the paper.
    “I’m one of the biggest fans you’re going to find,” she said, giddy after getting a hug from the smiling star.
    Downtown Guelph was abuzz on Friday, as the film crew transformed Douglas Street into a Toronto streetscape from the early 1900s. From the Redbrick Café to Woolwich Street, store signs were taken down and replica ‘old’ ones were put up. Vehicles were removed and horses and buggies were brought in.
    With cameras rolling and boom mics held just out of frame, Bisson’s character, Murdoch, strides onto the scene with a furrowed brow, anxiously looking to solve the latest caper.
    From a small crowd of fans, huddled closely on the sidewalk, one could hear hushed cries of “there he is!” as he made his way on screen.
    “Last week, I found out the main characters were going to be on scene and I absolutely lost my mind,” Castell-Prime said. The woman from Mount Forest commutes to Guelph daily for work, but she said she would have come to the city to see this shoot regardless if she was working here.
    Drawing excited gasps from small crowds of onlookers, Bisson repeatedly met with his fans, thanking them for coming out. Instinctively, they called him by his character name, and he smiled and corrected them.
    “My name is Yannick,” he said to his fans. “It’s a little weird to be called Murdoch. Then, you’re not an actor.”
    Producer of the show, Stephen Montgomery, said 130 people – including cast, crew, and background performers – were brought to Guelph for the shoot. He said they choose Douglas Street as the location because it perfectly portrayed a congested street in downtown Toronto in 1901, the year the show is set in.
    “The Victorian era is beginning to collide with the modern era of Toronto,” he said, adding it is rare to find a street in the greater Toronto area that runs as long as Douglas Street does, with older buildings on either side.
    The crew was to be filming throughout the day, capturing footage that would amount to around seven or eight-minutes’ worth of actual show time. This footage is being compiled for the second-last episode in the season, which will be aired sometime in March.
    Montgomery said the show typically chooses locations between 45 minutes and two hours from its home base in Toronto. These locations include Hamilton, Cambridge, Port Hope, and Guelph.
    Downtown Toronto has too much of a modern look to film there, he said.
    The crew is to leave Guelph on Friday evening and continue filming at its studio in Toronto until Tuesday, when it wraps up for the year. Tuesday will be its 115th day shooting this year, Montgomery said. Over that time, the crew will have made 18 episodes to cap off its seventh season.
    “It’s a family-level series that you can show anyone,” said Jackson Mathieu, who came out to see the shoot. He said he watches the show every week because it tells a good story without all of the violent imagery or excessive sexual references, like many shows tend to carry today.
    “Set in a very Edwardian, Victorian era, it’s simple, it’s innocent,” he said, but noted it still was able to touch on current issues, such as women’s rights, contraception and abortion.
    Having lived in Guelph for years, Mathieu said he was proud the city’s downtown was still able to provide such a beautiful Victorian era backdrop.
    “There have been efforts to preserve the older buildings,” he said. “As the periphery moves out around it, (Guelph) still has a core.”

Another highlight was a group of 11 Nineteenth Century nautical charts that came in a canvas bag, including charts of Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The lot opened at $4,740 from an online bidder and sparked a phone-Internet bidding war, eventually going to the determined phone bidder for $10,350, triple its high estimate.
    Also offered was a two-part, brass-fitted, camphorwood campaign chest, second quarter Nineteenth Century, at $5,290 and a Nineteenth Century clockwork pond model of the USM (US Mail SS Co) Adriatic , a two-wheeler, for $4,025.
    Selling above estimate were an ancient Egyptian limestone fragment showing a sunken relief profile portrait of a young official kneeling, but with his head up, at $6,900, and a Romanesque bas relief tablet of the Madonna and Child, Thirteenth Century, probably Siena, that took $9,200. Antiquities highlights also included an Italian Renaissance alabaster figure of Christ on the road to Calvary, possibly a Station of the Cross piece, that brought $6,325 and a decorative Greco-Roman cast gold rondel with inset garnet and bead adornment for $5,175.
    Highlighting furniture offerings were a pair of Chippendale bachelor chests in mahogany, English, in a diminutive size that brought $4,600; a rare Hepplewhite bowfront server with string inlay and block ends that went to a phone bidder for $8,050; a circa 1890 bark and twig Adirondack sideboard with tall, shaped backsplash having a single shelf at $6,325; and a Nineteenth Century heavy oak table, English, in dark finish, having rounded ends and long curved leaves, selling for $4,830.
    Leading the jewelry category were a platinum and diamond lady’s ring centered by an emerald-cut diamond, and a three-piece, antique 14K yellow gold and amethyst suite comprising a necklace and pair of earrings. Each brought $9,200. Another highlight among jewelry offerings was a Tiffany & Co. 14K yellow gold, ruby and diamond flexible link bracelet, measuring 6½ inches long, that brought $6,900.
    Early militaria included a Civil War-era crude cavalry saber with simple steel blade and unmarked, stamped, brass iron-shaped hilt that brought $5,750 and a Revolutionary War-era powder horn, dated 1775, and owned by Cornelius Feley of the important Farmington Valley, Conn., family, selling for $3,162.
    Ten hooked rugs crossed the block as Part I of the Barrie and Michael Pribyl Collection (the second part will be offered this winter). Several fine examples were signed by nearby Waldoboro, Maine, hooker Margaret Wellman. Standouts included a late 1800s–early 1900s Waldoboro hearth rug measuring 34½ by 78 inches, having a floral design, that was exhibited at the American Textile History Museum in 1999, that achieved $8,050 and a pictorial hooked rug with scenes of Maine, including lighthouse, a village, trees and water, made by Ivy, Houlton, 6 feet 7 inches by 6 feet 10 inches, going out at $6,900.

    «Internet permet aux marques d’atteindre une nouvelle clientèle»
    Expert en stratégies e-commerce, le CEO de l’entreprise Digital Luxury Group David Sadigh évoque les promesses de la vente en ligne pour les marques de luxe. Interview.

Sa société, qui dispose de bureaux à Genève, New York et Shanghai, s’est imposée comme une référence dans la production de rapports sur le marché du luxe, dans des domaines aussi divers que l’horlogerie, la mode, l’automobile, la joaillerie ou encore l’hôtellerie. Les index établis par DLG, à partir des recherches anonymes effectuées par des millions d’internautes dans les moteurs de recherche, constituent aujourd’hui une source d’information très prisée des décideurs dans les firmes de luxe, mais également dans les grandes banques ou hedge funds.

Il ne s’agit toutefois que de la pointe de l’iceberg, car énormément de gens préparent leur achat au travers d’internet. Pour environ 50% des produits de luxe vendus, l’acte d’achat est précédé par des visites sur des sites internet ou dans les réseaux sociaux. Les Etats-Unis restent clairement le premier marché pour la vente en ligne de produits de luxe, pour des motifs culturels et en raison de la maturité des infrastructures dans ce pays. Mais le e-commerce dans son ensemble est en train d’exploser en Chine, ce qui ouvre à terme de nouvelles perspectives.

Le premier concerne le client qui a peu de temps et ne recherche pas l’«expérience paillettes» de la boutique, mais la rapidité et l’aspect pratique. Aux Etats-Unis, on parle de «convenient and speed» pour décrire cette approche — par opposition à l’expression «ego and pride», associée à l’achat en boutique. Parmi cette catégorie de clients, beaucoup ont l’habitude de consommer des produits de luxe et connaissent déjà la marque ou l’objet de leur choix. Ils vont se rendre sur internet et procéder à leur achat assez rapidement, par exemple pour faire un cadeau. L’objectif est de recevoir le produit le plus rapidement possible, sans avoir à se déplacer et perdre du temps.

Il s’agit souvent de clients jeunes, plus sensibles au prix. Internet va leur permettre de trouver des offres (voyages de luxe, joaillerie, habits ou autre) à de meilleurs tarifs.
    Pour les marques, quels sont les principaux avantages de la vente en ligne?
    Le e-commerce constitue un très bon outil pour atteindre des consommateurs dans des régions où les points de vente sont rares. Il permet ainsi aux marques d’accéder à une nouvelle clientèle. Mais internet contribue aussi aux ventes dans des zones où le trafic est très dense. Certaines marques réalisent de très bonnes ventes en ligne à Londres, du fait de la difficulté de se déplacer au centre-ville en voiture. De plus, les gens vont souvent voir un produit en boutique et, si l’option leur est offerte, ils l’achètent ensuite sur internet.
    Si il y a quelques années, la question était de savoir quelles marques de luxe se lançaient dans le e-commerce, aujourd’hui, il est plus simple de recenser celles qui n’y vont pas. La plupart vendent désormais leurs produits en ligne.
    Toutefois, on a parfois le sentiment que le secteur du luxe s’est engagé avec réticence dans le e-commerce, avec la peur de perdre en exclusivité…
    Il y a une très grande disparité en fonction des segments du luxe, et l’horlogerie est clairement à la traîne de ce point de vue. Certaines marques préfèrent se cantonner à la vente en boutique car elles tiennent à proposer le conseil qui va avec leur produit. Or, donner la possibilité d’acheter sur internet revient à transmettre totalement le contrôle à l’acheteur. Ces marques estiment aussi que la vente en ligne ne correspond pas à leurs univers et à l’expérience d’achat qu’elles veulent offrir. Par exemple, telle marque prestigieuse ne souhaitera pas forcément que sa cliente, occupée à des tâches ménagères, se fasse livrer son colis par FedEx ou UPS, en même temps que d’autres courses plus communes.
    Les marques les plus réfractaires au e-commerce sont aussi celles qui possèdent peu de magasins en nom propre et qui travaillent avec un réseau historique de distributeurs et de détaillants. C’est le cas de maisons comme Rolex ou Patek Philippe, par exemple, qui voient dans la vente en ligne un risque de cannibalisation de leur réseau existant. A contrario, une marque comme Cartier, qui réalise une part significative de son chiffre d’affaires à travers ses propres boutiques, vend volontiers ses produits sur internet.
    Quels produits de luxe se prêtent particulièrement bien à l’achat on-line?
    Le segment des accessoires fonctionne très bien et représente une grosse part du marché du luxe. La marque Montblanc, par exemple, qui vend des stylos, mais aussi des ceintures ou de la maroquinerie, réalise de très bonnes ventes en ligne. Dans le domaine du prêt-à-porter, certaines marques design enregistrent également une grande part de leur chiffre d’affaires en ligne. C’est notamment le cas de l’enseigne américaine Tory Burch.
    TAG Heuer est aussi une marque très intéressante à ce niveau. Elle a déjà ouvert des e-commerces dans plusieurs pays. Le secteur des voyages de luxe se prête lui aussi très bien au e-commerce. Pour des chaînes telles que Kempinski ou Four Seasons, le canal internet est devenu central dans le monde entier. Ces sociétés ont mis en place des équipes dédiées aux stratégies e-commerce, avec des gens chargés de répondre aux clients et de se rendre sur les plateformes comme Trip Advisor pour répondre aux critiques. Il y a vraiment là des enjeux très importants, bien compris et bien intégrés de la part des chaînes hôtelières.
    Dans le domaine du e-commerce, les marques ont deux options: ouvrir leur propre site ou faire appel à une plateforme partenaire. Quelle est la tendance?
    Le trend est le même que dans le commerce traditionnel du secteur du luxe: la plupart des marques souhaitent ouvrir leur propre plateforme e-commerce car elles préfèrent garder un contrôle de A à Z. Néanmoins, on retrouve également leurs produits sur d’autres plateformes. Différents sites multi-marques tels que Net-a-Porter ou Asos prennent de fait toujours plus d’ampleur.
    A quel point la notoriété en ligne est-elle importante pour les marques? Est-ce une préoccupation supérieure à celle de la vente en ligne proprement dite?
    Dans les discussions que nous avons avec les marques, nous nous rendons compte que le concept de notoriété laisse progressivement place à celui de désirabilité. Autrement dit, il ne suffit pas pour les marques de se faire connaître mais de pouvoir susciter l’envie d’achat.
    Justement, est-ce que la notoriété en ligne d’une marque, notamment à travers les réseaux sociaux, se traduit forcément en acte d’achat?
    Pas forcément. L’avantage des réseaux sociaux est de permettre aux marques d’entretenir un lien continu avec leurs fans, avec des plateformes qu’elles contrôlent et maîtrisent. De nombreuses personnes qui n’ont pas forcément encore les moyens d’acheter certains produits, mais qui en sont déjà fans, peuvent ainsi suivre leurs marques favorites sur Twitter, Facebook, ou autre. C’est une excellente opportunité pour les marques d’entrer en discussion avec leurs potentiels futurs clients sur une base hebdomadaire, voire journalière.
    Toutefois, si le but est de générer de la vente pure, les réseaux sociaux ne sont pas forcément l’outil le plus efficace. Un riche internaute qui souhaite acheter un produit va lui se rendre directement sur le site de la marque, ou alors sur le site d’un revendeur, tel que Bergdorf Goodmann, à New York, ou Bon Génie à Genève. Quant aux gens qui ne savent pas encore quel produit ils veulent acheter, ils vont passer en majorité par les moteurs de recherche pour se faire une meilleure idée.
    Par exemple, énormément de requêtes du type «idée cadeau» ou «cadeau luxe» sont effectuées dans Google. Le mot «cadeau», ou «gift» en anglais, représente à lui seul des centaines de millions de recherches mensuelles. Les marques ont donc tout intérêt à être bien positionnées par rapport à ces recherches, afin que leur site apparaisse rapidement dans les résultats. Une personne qui se rend sur un moteur de recherche en tapant «luxury gift» se trouve en effet beaucoup plus proche d’un acte d’achat que quelqu’un qui devient fan d’une marque sur Facebook.

    David Sadigh n’a même pas 20 ans lorsqu’il fonde en 2000 à Genève sa première société, IC-Agency, vouée au conseil en marketing interactif. Pionnière dans son domaine, l’entreprise ne tarde pas à s’imposer comme une référence auprès de grandes multinationales, notamment grâce à ses logiciels de veille stratégique sur internet. Aujourd’hui âgé de 32 ans, marié et père de deux enfants, le CEO de Digital Luxury Group dispose d’une expérience enviée dans le domaine du luxe sur internet. Il intervient régulièrement en tant que conférencier ou comme expert dans les grands médias internationaux, tels que le «New York Times», le «Financial Times», Bloomberg ou CNBC. Diplômé de l’Université de Stanford, David Sadigh est aujourd’hui établi à New York, mais passe une large partie de son temps en Europe et en Chine. En dehors de ses journées de travail, il se passionne pour le tennis, qu’il pratique régulièrement.

    «Nous offrons à l’industrie davantage de transparence»
    Digital Luxury Group a fait de la récolte de données en ligne sa spécialité. Ses index offrent aux marques une connaissance inédite des préférences des consommateurs. Plongée dans l’envers du décor du net.
    Emanation de l’entreprise de marketing digital IC-Agency, fondée par David Sadigh en 2000 à Genève, Digital Luxury Group (DLG) se concentre aujourd’hui exclusivement sur l’industrie du luxe. La société, lancée en 2011, a installé ses bureaux à New York, Genève et Shanghai. Ses outils logiciels, développés à l’interne, lui permettent de recenser les millions de requêtes effectuées dans les moteurs de recherche, tels que Google, et de proposer des rapports désormais très attendus par toute l’industrie. C’est le cas du «World Watch Report» ou du «World Luxury Index», qui offre un ranking très précis des préférences des consommateurs dans les différentes régions du globe.
    Il devient ainsi possible pour les marques, mais aussi pour les banques, hedge funds et cabinets d’analyses, de savoir de façon objective quels produits rencontrent le plus de succès et sur quels marchés, quelles sont les marques qui progressent ou régressent, le tout avec un niveau de précision dans l’analyse extrêmement poussé.
    L’entreprise effectue également des mandats de conseil (notoriété sur les réseaux sociaux, veille stratégique, amélioration de la stratégie en ligne, etc.) pour le compte de marques prestigieuses, telles que Nespresso, Vacheron Constantin, Four Seasons, Piaget ou encore Sotheby’s.
    En quoi votre approche se distingue-t-elle des enquêtes d’opinion?
    Notre défi consiste à comprendre ce qui intéresse les gens sur internet. Avant nous, la solution consistait à appeler les consommateurs pour faire des sondages, mais la réalité, c’est que la clientèle luxe ne répond pas à des sondages. Elle n’est pas sensible au fait de pouvoir gagner un week-end à Saint-Moritz si elle passe vingt minutes à remplir un formulaire. Nous pensons que l’étude des requêtes dans les moteurs de recherche est beaucoup plus pertinente car elle reflète l’intérêt spontané des consommateurs. Grâce à ces outils, nous avons commencé à offrir davantage de transparence à l’industrie du luxe sur les goûts et les préférences de la clientèle au niveau international. Sur cette base, il est ensuite plus aisé de bâtir une stratégie digitale pour une marque, en fonction de son histoire, de son positionnement, de ses valeurs, de ses marchés prioritaires, de sa distribution, etc.
    Comment accédez-vous aux données des moteurs de recherche?
    En ce qui concerne les données de Google, elles sont librement accessibles durant une année. Comme nous avons commencé à les recenser il y a plus de cinq ans, nous disposons aujourd’hui d’un historique quasi unique dans notre domaine d’activité. Dans certains pays, comme la Russie ou la Chine, d’autres moteurs de recherche sont plus populaires que Google. Nous tissons alors des partenariats avec ces moteurs de recherche, comme c’est le cas avec Yandex en Russie.
    Par quels moyens améliorez-vous la visibilité de vos clients sur internet?
    Google utilise près de 300 critères pour créer une hiérarchie des sites qu’il propose à ses utilisateurs. L’un des métiers au sein de DLG consiste à suivre les évolutions algorithmiques chez Google — soit la manière dont il classifie l’information — et de nous assurer que les sites de nos clients soient le plus possible en adéquation avec ce fonctionnement.
    Par exemple, quand un internaute tape aujourd’hui «Swiss watches» sur Google, l’une des premières marques à apparaître dans les résultats de recherche est Tag Heuer. Il s’agit de l’un de nos clients, avec lequel nous avons beaucoup travaillé depuis cinq ans. Concrètement, nous avons cherché à optimiser le site internet de Tag Heuer, en fonction de la manière dont Google classifie l’information. Et le résultat, c’est que cette marque apparaît avant d’autres maisons horlogères plus réputées dans les résultats de recherche.
    Comment triez-vous les immenses quantités de données à votre disposition?
    Les informations disponibles dans les moteurs de recherche représentent en quelque sorte le pétrole brut. Mais le défi consiste à raffiner ce pétrole. L’un de nos concurrents aux Etats-Unis, qui a tenté de nous copier, a établi un ranking sur l’Inde en classant la marque Prada comme l’une des plus recherchées dans ce pays. Mais il se trouve que Prada est aussi le nom d’une célèbre actrice, Indira Prada… Cette anecdote illustre combien il est important d’utiliser les bons filtres pour analyser les résultats. Autre exemple: on dénombre énormément de recherches pour Omega, mais il s’agit souvent de gens qui souhaitent des informations sur les oméga 3.

Nous pouvons ainsi nous rendre compte que dans certains pays, il existe un lien très étroit entre les recherches sur internet et les ventes pour certains produits. Alors que dans d’autres régions, l’intérêt suscité sur internet ne se reflète pas forcément sur les chiffres de vente. Ces informations nous permettent d’émettre des alertes utiles pour nos clients: si par exemple un produit est très recherché sur internet dans tel pays, mais que les ventes ne suivent pas, il se peut que l’entreprise rencontre un problème de stock ou de distribution dans la région en question.
