LNP confirms plans for new rail sell off
The LNP government has confirmed in Queensland Parliament that it will seek a mandate from Queenslanders for new asset sales and has refused to support the ongoing government ownership of Queensland Rail.
State Leader of Katter’s Australian Party, Rob Katter, said that the LNP’s refusal to back his motion against asset sales in Queensland Parliament was very disappointing news for Queenslanders.
“Queenslanders have just voted out the Labor government because it sold our state assets,” Mr Katter said.
“Now, only six months after the election, Queenslanders are once again faced with a government that supports asset sales.
“Queenslanders will be very upset to hear that the new LNP government is now seeking a mandate to conduct a new fire sale of Queenslands assets.
“To achieve this it is clear that the LNP have embarked on what will be a three year propaganda campaign to scare Queenslanders into supporting their radical policies to privatise state assets.
“The good news is that Queenslanders will not be fooled by the LNP’s scare tactics,” he said.
“It is very disappointing that the government is so focused on cutbacks and asset sales.
“This will mean that the next three years, which should be spent on rebuilding Queenslands economy and state infrastructure, will be spent justifying new asset sales.
“There is no reason the government will commit to infrastructure development when it is clear the LNP are planning to privatise state assets.”

NEW MILFORD — Since January, the Faith Preparatory School cafeteria has been the place where people driven from their New York City homes by Superstorm Sandy met Sunday afternoons to eat, give thanks and share stories of survival.
As the one-year anniversary of the devastating storm drew near, fewer of those living in the mobile homes on the Faith Church property have stopped by. This past week, not even 10 showed up.
“It started in the last couple of months,” said Dennis Klaus , a 62-year-old former Brooklyn, N.Y., resident. “People know everybody’s stories. They don’t want their kids to always be known as storm victims and they are ready to move on.”
As of the end of the year, they will be moving on. The town will not extend the agreement with the church and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supplied the temporary housing for the 14 families from Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens displaced by the superstorm.
“The arrangement with the town of New Milford and the state of Connecticut was that because of the sanitary issues, such as the septic system, this was a temporary arrangement and all the units needed to be vacated by Dec. 31,” said John Hodge , a church member and operations director of the foundation, which is named for his cousin, a New York City firefighter who was killed at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
“We’re determined to live up to our agreement with the town,” Hodge said. “New Milford has been fantastic and did what New York would not do — took these people in.”
Many of the evacuees have already found other places to live. Some, like Meaghan Wentland , are planning to return to their former homes, which are in the process of being rebuilt. But a majority of the families want to stay in New Milford, Hodge said.
Victoria Ledeneva , her husband Valeriy Kalashnikov , and their two sons, Alex, 6, and Ivan, 7, will be among the half-dozen or so who will be moving, along with their trailers, to the Candle Hill-North Mobile Home Park at the other end of New Milford.
Ledeneva had passed the bar exam and just started working for a lawyer in Brooklyn when the monster storm drove the family from their home in the Midland Beach section of Staten Island. She lost that job, but has since established her own practice in Brooklyn and commutes there twice a week.
“We feel like we are free from city problems here,” Ledeneva said. “Even though we lost everything, it is better for us to be here.”
But for a few, like Klaus and Maryann Daino , a 62-year-old ex-Staten Islander who met and started a relationship after coming to New Milford, the future is clouded by uncertainty.
“As of the 31st, I’m going to be homeless,” she said.
She and Klaus hope to find temporary lodging, perhaps as caretakers, until they can get their respective finances in order and qualify for a mortgage that will allow them to buy their own home. Like some other Sandy refugees, they would like it to be in Connecticut.
“We love Connecticut,” Klaus said. “People here have been incredible to us, and the church has been phenomenal. We’d like to give something back.”
Just before Christmas, storm survivors began moving into the 14-foot -by-48-foot mobile homes, provided by the foundation and located on a four-acre parcel off Route 7 that is part of the Faith Church campus.
But even in Connecticut, some have been unable to escape the problems generated by Sandy.
Wentland’s mother is a security guard in New York City, staying with friends during the week and returning to New Milford on weekends. She was swindled out of $14,000 by an unscrupulous contractor who was supposed to repair her house, but never finished the job.
Volunteers, including Habitat for Humanity , stepped in, and Wentland, who has an 18-month-old son, hopes it will be finished by December.
Eventually, she said she would like to return to Connecticut, where she and her boyfriend, who works in Windsor, can raise their child.
“We’ve made real good friends here, and I plan on coming back,” she said.
Over the past 10 months, many evacuees have become part of the church community, worshipping there on Sunday and enrolling their children in the school, while working to reestablish the lives disrupted by the storm.
But as time has gone by, they said they have grown tired of being interviewed by newspapers and television stations, especially in the past few weeks, as the anniversary of the superstorm was approaching.
On Monday, a “No Trespassing” was put up outside the trailers.
“You just get tired of baring your soul,” Klaus said.

The product menu is on the left side of the page and you could say that it is a never-ending list of famous brand names. You’ve better know what you’re looking for; otherwise it will just take forever to browse through all the collection hoping to find one that looks more appealing than the others. The car features a new grille, LEDs on the front lights, a steeper windscreen and a lower rear bumper. It will come with a choice of three new 3 or 4 cylinder engines with fuel consumption reduced by about 27 percent, Schwarzenbauer said.The new MINI One will be the entry-level model and prices should start at around £13,500, with the MINI Cooper, which comes with more equipment and a more powerful engine as standard, coming in at around £15,000.There will also be a £16,000 diesel version of the Cooper, called the MINI Cooper D, which will be the most economical model in the range. The MINI Cooper S, costing £18,500, will be the fastest and most powerful model.The MINI Cooper and Cooper D will be around £400 more expensive than current models.BMW also said it would invest £750million at its three British plants in the coming years, with £500million of that being pumped into the plant in Oxford, where a new body assembly arena has been built featuring 1,000 robots, more than double the amount used on previous versions.It said the investment would support its international growth plans for the Mini, which will expand its current line-up of seven models to include up to 10 different body styles in the medium term."Mini is in good hands with BMW," British transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said."The success of the Mini proves Britain’s manufacturing sector is good enough to compete and win on the global stage."
