The Australian Greens today welcomed Federal Labor’s pledge to permanently protect the Koongarra region of Kakadu from the threat of uranium mining.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett made the commitment in Darwin today, incorporating the Koongarra project area into the surrounding Kakadu National Park and removing the possibility of future uranium mining.

“This is indeed wonderful news for locals and all Australians concerned about safeguarding our national heritage,” said Greens Senator Scott Ludlam, spokesperson on nuclear issues.

“We congratulate the Koongarra Traditional Owners, the Djok people, and neighbouring clans for their tireless efforts and vision that will now see this precious region protected for all time.

“I urge the Federal Coalition to support today’s announcement and confirm they will not tamper with it if they win next Saturday’s federal election,” Senator Ludlam said.
