With the NBN switched on, the Greens say a world class digital media learning and production centre based in Launceston could maximise Tasmania’s communications advantage, and offer a platform for the development of an online community TV station.

Greens deputy leader, Senator Christine Milne called for a study into the feasibility of the digital media centre, saying it would provide an inspiration for those wishing to explore the benefits of a super fast internet connection.

“The Greens are very interested in any proposal that aims to maximise NBN benefits for all Tasmanians,” Senator Milne said.

“This digital media centre proposal, devised by local digital communications expert, John Swindell, will use the National Broadband Network to open up new career opportunities for young Tasmanians in the fields of web design, graphic design and online media production.

“Young Tasmanians want to be part of a creative culture and innovative environment, and access to 21st century jobs at home.”

A centre like this has the potential to give people experience in:
• producing high quality online broadcast programs with content for film and media, multimedia, digital arts, graphic design and web design
• broadcasting online programs, and
• marketing programs to local and overseas buyers.

“It will be modelled on the dynamic new media centre recently established in Brisbane.

Greens Senate candidate, Peter Whish Wilson says the centre has many opportunities for all households connected to the NBN.

“A digital media learning hub such as this will realise the potential of the NBN for Tasmanians. It will open minds and opportunities, helping business, learning, ideas and communication to flourish in Tasmania.”
