Secular Party – Put the “secular” back into Queensland education

Secular Party of Australia

MEDIA RELEASE: Put the “secular” back into Queensland education

It is no wonder that children in Queensland schools are being subjected to the promotions of evangelical Christians. The Queensland Education Act is the least secular in Australia.

The Secular Party seeks to restore secularism to the state education system in Queensland. This is no more than what the Australian Constitution requires. Section 116 states that “The Commonwealth shall not make any law for establishing any religion, or for imposing any religious observance, or for prohibiting the free exercise of any religion”.

It should not be the business of government to promote religion. The Secular Party supports a challenge to the School Chaplains Program on the grounds that it breaches the Constitution.

It is also the policy of the Secular Party that faith schools should not receive government funding. To be eligible for school fee tax rebates, non-government schools should not be biased in favour of any particular religion. They should either teach comparative religion, or teach their faith programmes outside school hours in non-compulsory sessions.

The Secular Party is for the first time fielding thirty-one candidates across Australia. In Queensland, Katrina Alberts and Peter Shelton are standing for the Senate. Steve Jeffery is standing in Capricornia.

The Secular Party’s policies do not promote atheism. Our policies support the concept that the state should be neutral towards religion. We do reserve the right to speak freely about religion however. Will Jesus make a comeback in Queensland schools? In her capacity as an entertainer, Kat Alberts does not think so. Reread section 116. It says the Commonwealth will make no blah blah. Education is still a state responsibility, and even with the national curriculum, it will still be the states making the laws. There may be case law that applies this to the states, but I am unaware of it if there is.

That said, I agree that it should apply.
