Where do you stand on the Issue of Uranium Mining, Nuclear Waste Management, and Nuclear Power for Australia?
It is my belief that We should not be mining Uranium, and we should never Have Nuclear Power Stations in Australia.
John Howard commissioned a Prime Ministerial “Nuclear Task Force”in May 2006 to look at possible sites for Nuclear Power sites.
The Australia Institute released a research paper, number 40, in january 2007, Andrew Macintosh titled “Siting Nuclear Power Stations in Australia, where should they go?”
This paper located 19 sites. All coastal, all near major regional centres.
They are Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Bribie Island, Port Stevens, Central Coast, Botany Bay, Port Kembla, Jervis Bay/Sussex Inlet, South Gippsland, Western Port, Port Phillip, Portland, Mt Gambier/Millicent, Port Adelaide, and Port Augusta/Port Pirie.
I believe that the Labour Party overturned the decades old 3 mines policy, by a very slim margin, because Labor like the Liberal party sees Nuclear as the long term carbon emissions-free power for Australia.
Tony Abbott states John Howard as his hero. Upon Assuming leadership of the Liberal party by one vote, Tony Abbott reshuffled his cabinet and ministry to have very much John Howards old Government ministry.
In one of his last statements as Opposition Leader, Malcolm Turnbull said that the reality was that in the long term Australia would need Nuclear power, about 50 plants.
Major Energy companies keep denying Green energy is viable, and we see how much clout they have. Uranium Mining is exempt from the new Resources Rent Tax. Any tax on mining should be a teared system and applied evenly to all.
Labor has committed to a nuclear waste dump at Muckaty in the Northern Territory, using money quarantining to force Aboriginals into towns.
