Drive- by shooting re-enforces need for new police station in Ormeau
Local Democratic Labor Party candidate Rowan Harrip, today assured his neighbours that if elected he would make it his goal to have a new police station located in Ormeau.
“While the current sitting member may work in Coomera, I and my family live in the area and have had concerns for years. This seems to have been totally ignored by the current member and the outgoing government and its time something was done.” DLP Candidate Rowan Harrip said today.
Condemning the drive-by shooting of the sitting Member Mr Crandon’s electoral office Mr Harrip said today. “Enough is enough. The drive-by shooting yesterday of Mr Crandan’s electoral office only confirms the need and the urgency. The people in the district need a police station located at Ormeau that would service Eagleby, Pimpama and Jacobs Well as well as backing up the stations currently located in Beenleigh and Coomera.”
“ It’s okay for Mr Crandon to talk of lawlessness but he doesn’t live here and I do and I’m passionate about getting it right for the people of this great electorate”. Mr Harrip said today. [end]

RAPAPORT… [b][url=http://www.tiffanyjewelrysell.com]tiffany[/url][/b] The use of digital media to grow online and offline sales is a recipe for growth that has had a positive impact on the specialty retail sector, including some jewelers, according to a recent report by L2 Think Tank. However, there is a long way to go in tapping the full potential of ecommerce and cross-channel influence, according to the group.
L2 measured the ”digital IQ” of specialty retailers, including Tiffany & Co., Zale, Fossil, Kay Jewelers, Swatch, Cartier and others, by weighing the function and content of the websites, digital marketing strategy, mobile compatibility and social media presence. [b]cheap tiffany & co[/b] L2 then assigned its benchmark definitions of ”Genius,” the highest level of digital competence, ”Gifted,” a strong level of innovation and experimentation, ”Average” or just functional and predictable, and ”Challenged,” which reflected poor execution and inconsistent platforms. The last category, ”Feeble,” is self explanatory.
In general trends, the report found that 28 percent of specialty retailers now offer 24/7 customer service, which is up 10 percent from 2012. [b]tiffany silver[/b] Live chat is also on the rise with 28 percent of retailers, including Kay Jewelers, having implemented this function recently. In terms of social media importance, Pinterest and Instagram have joined Facebook and YouTube as ”must be there” platforms. While email frequency varied dramatically by product category, the report showed the jewelry category as the weakest performer with email frequency of only 0.57 weekly emails, accounting for 4 percent of website traffic, compared with 2.49 weekly emails from beauty and skincare brands that drove website traffic up 14 percent on average.
Overall, L2 ranked Sephora as the specialty retail industry’s only Genius for the best execution of digital strategy and platform integration. Of retailers that sell jewelry, Coach, Tiffany & Co. and Kate Spade were Gifted, while Swarovski, Fossil, Swatch, Kay Jewelers and Michael Kors were just Average. L2 labeled Cartier and Zale as digitally Challenged with much improvement required to tap ecommerce opportunity. Vince Camuto and Massimo Dutti were scored Feeble.

Froome a franchi la ligne au sein du peloton, à plus de 7 minutes des échappés. « Une étape tranquille ? Non, ça n'existe pas dans le Tour », a répliqué, de sa voix douce, le maillot jaune. « Les 80 premiers kilomètres ont été assez intenses, ce n'était pas facile. Après, les équipiers ont contrôlé ».
Qu'a-t-il manqué à Julien Simon pour signer la première victoire française ? « Rien », répond Stéphane Heulot, le responsable de l'équipe Sojasun qui affiche le plus petit budget des 22 formations en lice mais certes pas la plus petite envie. Depuis le départ de Corse, ses coureurs ont été présents à sept reprises dans l'échappée. « Mais on n'est pas là pour montrer le maillot, on est là pour gagner. Et, pour ça, on essaye de trouver des failles. »
Julien Simon, aussi entreprenant que méritant, est sorti à 15 km de l'arrivée, au sommet de la côte de la Duchère, l'avant-dernière difficulté du jour. Il a mis à profit un instant de flottement pour foncer, s'assurer un avantage maximal de 22" et résister le long des quais du Rhône dans la traversée de Lyon. Avant d'être rejoint, suite au forcing du puissant coureur allemand Marcus Burghardt, par le Suisse Michael Albasini (2 e de l'étape) sous la flamme rouge du dernier km.
L'interminable ligne droite (2.100 m) menant au stade de Gerland a condamné le puncheur breton, qui n'avait jamais été aussi près du succès dans le Tour. « S'il y avait eu des virages… », a soupiré Julien Simon qui, à 27 ans, est l'un des très bons coureurs du peloton français, capable d'inquiéter les meilleurs spécialistes dans les arrivées en côte.
« Il a fait la course parfaite, a ajouté Heulot. Ça s'est joué à un poil de mouche ! Le Tour, c'est du très haut niveau. Tous les coureurs se sont livrés, on l'a vu avec des coureurs du calibre de Millar et Voigt (distancés dans le final) . » L'analyse est juste. Mais le cyclisme français, incontestablement en progrès sur l'ensemble de la saison, attend toujours son premier succès d'étape (cinq succès l'an passé).

Weyerhaeuser Co. is planning to increase the timber harvested in its former Longview Timberlands property to meet rising export and domestic demand, company officials said Friday.In their quarterly earnings call with investors, company officials said the 645,000 acres of the former Longview Fibre Co. timberlands in Washington and Oregon are in a prime location to supply its West Coast properties, including the lumber mill and log dock in Longview.Officials added that they believe they can increase log and lumber output on the lands by taking immediate advantage of timber that is mature enough to harvest.“We’ll be accelerating that harvest because of the maturity of that forest,” Patty Bedient, Weyerhaeuser’s chief financial officer, told analysts.Federal Way-based Weyerhaeuser announced its $2.15 billion purchase of Longview Timberlands LLC June 16 from Toronto-based Brookfield Asset Management. The sale was finalized earlier this week. With the purchase, Weyerhaeuser increased its timber holdings in the West by 33 percent, to 2.6 million acres.Company officials say they don’t expect income from the additional timberlands to offset a seasonal dip in log export sales expected in the current quarter. Log export prices are expected to fall because of seasonal construction slowdowns in China and Japan, Bedient said.Largely because of the Longview Timberlands purchase, Dan Fulton, Weyerhaeuser’s outgoing CEO, called the April-June quarter a “milestone” for the company. Net sales rose 20 percent to $2.1 billion, the highest since the nationwide housing collapse of 2008, Fulton said.Net earnings in the last quarter were $196 million, about four times more than the same quarter last year. Shareholder dividends increased from 20 cents to 22 cents per share, and total dividends have risen 47 percent over the last year.The company’s stock price traded between $28 and $29 per share Friday.Lumber sales companywide increased 13 percent over the second quarter. Weyerhaeuser’s largest West Coast sawmill is in Longview, producing about one-third of the company’s total output in the region.Nationwide housing starts fell nearly 10 percent in June to a rate of 836,000 units per year, the lowest rate since August, but starts still were stronger than in June 2012, according to the U.S. Commerce Department.“Housing is recovering, but has a long way to go,” Fulton said.

Forced to scale back timber harvests by a lawsuit, the Oregon Land Board may instead sell 2,714 acres in the Elliott State Forest to raise money for public schools.
The suit, filed by conservation groups, has [blocked plans to increase logging in the forest](/land/article/lawsuit-blocks-logging-in-ore-state-forest/ “”) between Reedsport and Coos Bay. The suit claims stepped-up timber sales will harm the marbled murrelet, a threatened species. A federal judge has issued an [injunction against some logging](/land/article/judge-halts-logging-in-oregon-state-forests/ “”) until the suit is resolved.
With future timber harvests in doubt, the land board will consider selling three scattered parcels on the western edge of the forest in Douglas and Coos counties.
“The state is looking to maximize revenue for the school fund,” Department of State Lands spokeswoman Julie Curtis said.
The conservation groups that sued to stop timber sales also object to selling the timberlands.
They say a timber company likely would be the highest bidder.
“I think this is a horrible idea,” said Josh Laughlin, campaign director for Cascadia Wildlands, one of the groups involved in the lawsuit. “We are going to pull out all the stops to make sure public lands stay in public hands,” he said.
In picking possible parcels to sell, the state looked at the value of timber, accessibility and environmental issues, including whether threatened or endangered species occupy the land.
Laughlin said conservation group volunteers have seen low-flying marbled murrelets in one parcel, an indication the sites are occupied by the seabird, which are protected by the Endangered Species Act.
“Prospective purchasers should have their red flags up because it’s such a liability,” he said. “In our minds, the diligent thing to do for school kids and species is to create a balanced forest plan with habitat conservation.”
The lawsuit came after the land board – made up of Gov. John Kitzhaber, Secretary of State Kate Brown and Treasurer Ted Wheeler – approved increasing logging in the Elliott from 25 million board feet to 40 million board feet a year.
The lawsuit and court injunction have caused the state to limit timber harvests this year to about 15 million board feet.
The land board told the Department of Forestry in June to plan a sale but has not given final approval to hold one. The land board will take public comment about the proposed sale until Sept. 3.
Curtis said forestry officials won’t have an estimate of the amount of timber on the three parcels until late October. She noted that conservation groups would also be able to bid on the land.
The president of the Oregon Forest Industries Council, Kristina McNitt, said she’s pleased the state may sell timberlands, but sorry the lands can’t be logged while in public hands.
“On the one hand, OFIC applauds the State Land Board for exploring alternative ownership options that will support communities and schools. The status quo is unacceptable,” McNitt said in an email. “On the other hand, it’s a sad acknowledgment there’s likely no foreseeable balance wherein the state can maintain public ownership of an awesome resource and still recognize competitive returns − in perpetuity.”

NEW YORK (AFN) – De aandelenbeurzen op Wall Street zijn dinsdag met aanzienlijke verliezen gesloten. Net als in Europa overschaduwden de zorgen over mogelijk militair ingrijpen in Syrië opbeurende berichten over de economie.

Italiaanse investeerder neemt aandeel in Moncler

In voorbereiding op de uiteindelijke beursgang van Moncler,
heeft het luxe Italiaanse modemerk een nieuwe aandeelhouder erbij. [b][url=http://www.asmoncleroutlet.com/nl/]moncler[/url][/b] Het Italiaanse Tamburi Investment Partners (TIP) heeft voor 103 miljoen euro een aandeel van 14 procent genomen in Moncler eigenaar Ruffini Partecipazioni, het holdingbedrijf van Moncler voorzitter en creatief directeur Remo Ruffini, dat op zijn beurt een aandeel van 32 procent in het merk heeft.
Eerder dit jaar werd bekend gemaakt dat Moncler – bekend vanwege zijn luxe gewatteerde jassen – zich opmaakt voor een beursgang. [b][url=http://www.asmoncleroutlet.com/nl/]moncler[/url][/b] Gebaseerd op deze transactie heeft de Moncler groep een waarde van 2,3 miljard euro. Victoria Beckham viel twee jaar geleden al door de mand. De jurken die ze voor 1800 euro ‘aan de vrouw bracht’ bleken geproduceerd voor slechts 72 euro. Inclusief de stof kwam de kostprijs uit op 132 euro. Wat blijkt nu:
consumenten willen zelf graag veel betalen voor designerkleding.

Volgens het US Bureau of Labor Statistics stegen de prijzen van luxe kleding en accessoires in tien jaar tijd met 60 procent. Ter vergelijking: de inflatie in Amerika steeg in tien jaar gemiddeld met 27 procent. Een paar schoenen van Manolo Blahnik bijvoorbeeld, kostten in 2003 nog 485 dollar (364 euro), tien jaar later gaan dezelfde schoenen voor 755 dollar (568 euro) over de toonbank, schrijft BusinessOfFashion.com. De nieuwste collectie schoenen van Blahnik kosten inmiddels zo’n 1000 dollar (752 euro).
Luxe mode wordt duurder
Voor een deel valt de stijging van designerkleding te verklaren door de hogere productiekosten. Zo zijn de lonen van arbeiders in China in vergelijking met vorig jaar, met 12 procent gestegen. De uurlonen in Azië zijn de afgelopen tien jaar verdubbeld. Daarnaast hebben bedrijven te maken met kosten voor het materiaal, het ontwerpen, marketing, winkelhuren en winkelpersoneel. In de prijs wordt ook vast rekening gehouden met de uitverkoop. Luxe labels en retailers kunnen zo toch nog wat verdienen als de kledingstukken voor de helft van de prijs de deur uit gaan.

En met exclusieve mode kan een status worden uitgedrukt. Volgens BusinessOfFashion.com maakte Burberry in maart bekend de prijzen te verhogen om nieuwe, welvarende, consumenten aan te trekken. Een maand geleden sprak het Britse modehuis van een ‘verdere stijging van de prijzen, door productinnovaties’.

Toen ze laatst echter een accessoire van Tom Ford wilde kopen in Zurich, voor 38.000 dollar (28.586 euro), kreeg ze te horen van de verkoopster: "Deze tas is te duur voor u".

RENSWOUDE – De opkomst bij Kraaienmarkt in Renswoude viel zaterdag volgens de deelnemers nogal tegen. In de Kerkstraat, bij de Van Reedeweg en bij het Kerkplein stonden tal van kramen waar de liefhebber van alles kon aanschaffen. Desondanks waren diverse kramen al voor het einde van de markt leeggeruimd.
De Kraaienmarkt werd gehouden op vrijwel dezelfde locatie waar destijds door de ondernemersvereniging ‘Hartje Renswoude’ gehouden werd. De Kraaienmarkt is een initiatief van VVV Regio Vallei, maar duidelijk is wel dat de Kraaienmarkt nog geen Hartje Renswoude is. Laatstgenoemde was altijd grootser van opzet. Nu Hartje Renswoude enkele jaren niet meer gehouden wordt, is het de vraag of de Kraaienmarkt in dat gat kan springen. Zaterdag leek dit nog niet het geval. De weersomstandigheden waren gunstig, maar wellicht vonden potentiële bezoekers het toch te warm.
Buiten de kramen met onder meer kleding, sieraden, boeken en snuisterijen was er ook een kleedjesmarkt. Maar de belangstelling daarvoor was ook niet echt groot. Eén van de verkopers vertelde het best gezellig gevonden te hebben. Hij heeft enkele kleine fietsjes verkocht, dus die hebben nog wat opgebracht. ,,Ik moest ze toch kwijt”, aldus de koopman.
,,Nee, het viel niet helemaal mee”, vertelt één van de kraamhouders die langzaam aan het opruimen is. ,,Tegen een uur of drie begon het pas een beetje te lopen.” Eén van de dames die ook met koopwaar op de Kraaienmarkt staat roept: ,,Wat ga jij doen? Vijf uur is vijf uur!” Maar onverstoorbaar wordt de kraam leeggehaald en laadt de koopman zijn spullen in de auto.
,,Ik begrijp dat het de eerste editie is na Hartje Renswoude”, zegt een andere koopman. ,,Het is het proberen waard. Ik kom zelf uit Mijdrecht, maar denk wel dat ik een volgende keer weer zou komen.” Hij verkoop van alles, onder meer een Tiffany-werk (glaskunst, red.). ,,Dat verkoop ik het liefst”, merkt hij op. ,,Kijk nou, Kuifje. Daar ben ik ongeveer acht uur mee bezig en dan de kosten van het materiaal nog. Het kost maar 45 euro. Als ik daar wat dingen van verkoop, kan ik weer nieuw materiaal kopen en weer met m’n hobby aan de slag.”
Ook de bibliotheek had een kraam, maar bibliothecaresse Marijke de Vos kon beamen dat het niet druk is geweest.

Misschien is een beetje (goede) promotie ook handig. Ik denk dat half Renswoude niet eens van het bestaan af wist van deze markt. Tevens een markt midden in de vakantie tijd is ook niet even handig misschien.

[b][url=http://www.allwatchescompany.com/jp/]時計[/url][/b] 高級時計ブランド「フランクミュラー」をもじった「フランク三浦」という時計が話題を呼んでいる。文字盤のシャレたデザインなど、パッと見は「本家」に通じる部分もあるのだが、盤面にはハッキリと「フランク三浦」のロゴが……。「ミウラ」の部分をあいまいに発音して笑いをとるジョークグッズとして人気だという。
[b]安い腕時計[/b]
[b]トップブランドの腕時計[/b] デザインだけでなく、裏面や説明書にも「笑える要素」がちりばめられており、あくまでもネタであることは明確だ。その点で、消費者をだます「偽物」や「コピー商品」とは違う。だが、北海道土産の定番「白い恋人」のパロディ商品「面白い恋人」をめぐる裁判があったように、パロディなら何でも許されるというわけではなさそうだ。
[b]すべてのブランドの腕時計[/b]
[b][url=http://www.allwatchescompany.com/jp/]スイスの時計[/url][/b] パロディは、名前やデザインなど何かしら「本家」と似た部分がないと成り立たないが、法律的にはどこまで許容されるものなのだろうか。パロディ商品のガイドラインや基準のようなものはあるのだろうか。知的財産権にくわしい 近藤恭子弁護士 に聞いた。

●パロディと本家の商標がどれだけ類似しているのか？
「パロディが許されるかどうかについて特別な法律の規定はありません。したがって、商標法等の個々の法律において、権利侵害があるかを検討することになります」
パロディにもいろいろあるが、「フランク三浦」のような有名商品の名前をもじったパロディの場合は、本家の「商標権」を侵害しているのではないか、ということが問題になる。
「商標権の侵害（商標法37条1号）にあたるかどうかを検討する際に、まず注目するのは、問題の商品に使用された商標の『類似性』です。その商標の外観・観念・称呼（呼び方）が取引者に与える印象等で、どこまで類似しているのかを判断します。
そのうえで、具体的な取引状況を考慮して、対比される商標が同一または類似の商品に使用された場合に、商品の出所について『誤認混同』を生じる恐れがあるかどうかを検討します。そして、商標権の侵害が認められるときは、差止請求や損害賠償請求の対象となります」
つまり、パロディ商品に使われている商標が「本家の商標」とどれだけ似ているかがポイントとなるわけだ。そして、パロディと本家の商標がそっくりで、本家と混同してしまう恐れがある場合は、商標権侵害にあたるということだ。
●「フランク三浦」と「FRANCK MULLER」は呼び方が似ているが・・・
では、「フランク三浦」の場合はどうなのだろう？
「今回の『フランク三浦』について検討すると、本家である『FRANCK MULLER』と、称呼において共通する点がないわけではありません。しかし、『フランク三浦』と『FRANCK MULLER』とでは外観に差異があり、価格帯も数千円台と数百万円台というように大きく異なっています。
そのような点からすると、取引者が商品の出所につき誤認混同をすることは、通常考えられないといえます。したがって、『類似』（商標法37条1号）にはあたらず、商標権侵害は成立しないと考えられます」
どうやら「フランク三浦」が「FRANCK MULLER」から商標権侵害で訴えられる可能性は小さいといえそうだ。だが、近藤弁護士によれば、商標権以外の問題も考慮する必要があるという。
「商品の出所につき混同の恐れがない場合でも、著名な商標の顧客吸引力を利用することによって不正に利益を得る場合や、商標の使用が企業のブランド力を毀損する場合には、不正競争防止法2条1項2号や一般不法行為が問題となる可能性があります」
ものまねタレントや二次創作の隆盛にみられるように、日本ではさまざまな「パロディ」が次から次へと生まれて、我々を楽しませてくれている。ときには商標権の侵害などで訴えられてしまう場合もあるだろうが、できるだけパロディと本家が「共存共栄」していけることを願いたい。

Anderson（J.W.アンダーソン）」などインポートブランドを中心に、ファッションからアートまでセレクト。またオープンに合わせ「KRISVANASSCHE（クリスヴァンアッシュ）」のポップアップショップが開設される。

ティファニーの業績は最近、好調な海外事業がけん引している。6月にはモスクワの高級百貨店内に2階建て店舗を開店する計画を発表した。この店舗にはロシアで初めて、全額を出資するという。

SUITABLE SHADES
The eyes can be highlighted really easily and mascara is the most effective and important make-up tool you need for this, explains Bianca Hartkopf, make-up expert, Revlon India. “For the day, go with a different tone such as a deep purple, green or a blue instead of a black. Make sure it is waterproof and use an angle brush and sweep it on the top lash. "We see that in the trafficking of human beings – a continued threat – this may shift from classical sexual exploitation, to labor," he told CNBC. ( Read more: Saudi princess charged with US human trafficking ) In its 2013 report on organized crime, Europol said the growing demand for cheap products and services was stimulating a shadow economy in which migrant labor was exploited. "Irregular migrants arriving in destination countries often have no choice but to accept exploitative conditions and working practices in order to pay off debts incurred through their journey," the report said. "Exploited workers are paid less and work harder, making them attractive to unscrupulous employers, who are seeking to decrease production costs." In its report, Europol noted that a large population of "mobile young people" from Africa, the Middle East and East Asia, who lacked employment opportunities, helped sustain the supply of illegal labor to Europe. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated that around 55,000 migrants are smuggled from North, East and West Africa alone to Europe each year, generating roughly $150 million in criminal income. ( View more: Illegal aliens could power US economy: Hermes CEO ) "The economic crisis has caused considerable difficulties in many developing countries, and there have been considerable layoffs," noted Joutsen. "Although we cannot say for sure, it would be reasonable to assume that, since persons who are unemployed may, out of desperation and/or naiveté, believe the promises that are given to them by the human traffickers, this form of activity has been increasing," he said. Rauschenbach added that macroeconomic difficulties, such as high unemployment and low profit margins, could increase social tolerance of criminal activity. This means that individuals and businesses are more likely to commit certain crimes, and also more likely to fall victim to them. Fueling fraud CIFAS, the U.K's fraud prevention service, has already noted an upsurge in fraud since the economic crisis began. In 2012, the number of frauds committed rose 5 percent to hit an annual total of 248,325, following an unprecedented surge in the previous year. Across Europe, payment card fraud alone generates around 1.5 billion euros ($2.0 billion) in criminal income per year, according to Europol. "The economy continued to play a prominent role in the fraud landscape: acting as a likely driver for many frauds, an influence on the types of fraud being committed and – also – a disguise for much fraud that has escaped detection," CIFAS said in a 2013 report.
Michael Levi, a professor of criminology at Cardiff University in Wales, noted that insurance fraud had increased in the U.K. since the downturn, and said an upturn in bankruptcy fraud could also be expected. "It is the expectation or fear that one may become unemployed that presents the extra risk here," said Levi, in an academic paper. ( Read more: Young, educated and never had a job ) Furthermore, tight public finances mean countries may lack the finances to tackle any upsurge in crime effectively. This is particularly problematic, given that an increase in crimes like tax evasion and goods smuggling can have a direct and significant impact on government revenues. Edwards said European countries were failing to invest resources in tackling organized crime, with areas such as counter-terrorism comparatively better-funded. ( Read more: A European FBI 'would save the EU millions' ) "Their intelligence picture remains very patchy, and while some are now taking organized crime more seriously, there is still much to do," he said. "Fighting organized crime requires a joined-up approach across local agencies and national governments, meaningful legislation and real investment."

There were at least 20 varieties of apples for sampling at the booth the Gowans Oak Tree and Philo Apple Farm shared inside the Agricultural Building during the 86th annual Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show Saturday. [b]tiffany and co[/b]

Apple season runs from as early as late-July to mid-November, and the ones on-hand during the weekend of the fair are the ones that are most plentiful at the moment. Even so, taste-testers were only allowed to buy two apples at the booth, and were encouraged to visit the farms for further purchase. As with any fair, there was the standard selection of tri-tip, hamburgers, hot dogs, cotton candy, ice cream and all manner of fried foods. Children of all ages (1 through 92) boarded rides and browsed the booths of vendors selling everything from lollipops to hand-made jewelry.
Children in 4-H clubs and Future Farmers of America showed the animals they raise and earned points for their hard work. Cowboys and girls showed off their calf-roping, barrel-racing and bronc-riding skills in the fairgrounds’ arena for judges and everyone else to see.
There were photographs, paintings, quilts, baked goods and even a hand-crafted fishing boat on display, among other varieties of the county’s best craftsmanship for fair-goers to appreciate.
Unique to Boonville’s annual fair is the Wool and Fiber Festival and fleece auction, now in its 16th year. One can walk into the fairgrounds’ Commercial building and easily see the progression of how wool gets to the marketplace, starting with a sheep shearing demonstration.
“My wife can always tell I’ve been shearing by how soft my hands are,” Matthew Gilbert of Mendocino Wool And Fiber told an audience that had gathered to watch him relieve a black sheep of its fleece.
The sheep relaxed through the whole ordeal, then seemed to bleat in gratitude when Gilbert was done, and stood patiently while people came up to pet it. Gilbert explained that the leftover wool on the animal felt greasy because sheep produce lanolin — similar to the oil a person’s skin secretes — which is used in many moisturizers.
“It’s hard to build up calluses during sheep-shearing season,” joked Gilbert, who has been shearing sheep for 13 years. He also shears llamas, alpacas and goats, he told the audience.
He fielded questions, including how he avoids the animals’ “tender parts,” what he does during hot weather, how often he nicks an animal’s skin and what kind of wool is the best variety.
Finer wool makes less itchy clothing, he said, but not necessarily the best wool, depending on how it’s used. Coarser wool is easier and faster to shear, Gilbert said.
“The finest wools tend to be more valuable,” he said, “but sometimes you don’t want fine, you want coarser.”
Sitting nearby was Deanna Thomas of Flynn Creek Churros Natural Wool. She used her feet to turn a spinning wheel while working a strand of medium-brown wool through her fingers and onto a spool.
“I’m spinning a fat yarn, and I’m going to ply it with this,” she said, pointing to a spool full of a lighter brown yarn, “and I’m going to make a hat — a nice, big cap.”
Across the aisle from her was Wendy Clisham of Albion, who was demonstrating a hand-cranked sock knitter for loose groups of onlookers who gathered to watch.
The fair opens at 8:30 a.m. today. Sheep dog trials and classic car show judging are at 10 a.m. A petting zoo, pony rides and other attractions are available, along with a noon parade on Highway 128 to the rodeo arena. The rodeo begins at 2 p.m., and buildings close at 10 p.m. Gates close at 1 a.m.

The couple says the audience for the film was predominantly African American.
“There were rumblings among the crowd of being profiled at the movies, and they must have thought this was going to be a particularly rowdy crowd,” Flowers later told local ABC News outlet WJLA .
The Weinstein Company film starring Forrest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey was the top film at the box office this weekend earning $25 million. The film follows the life of butler Cecil Gaines (Whitaker) who served under eight presidencies.
There haven’t been any reports of similar occurences in other theaters nationwide.
“They had what I thought were bulletproof vests,” Hanson told ABC News. “They had sidearms. They looked serious.”

Regal Cinemas responded with the following statement saying its protocol for sold out shows:
Regal Entertainment Group routinely employs security personnel to ensure the safety of all of our guests and staff. When a theatre experiences sold out showings of any feature, security will assist with crowd control and guest assistance throughout the facility, including auditoriums.
This weekend our Majestic theatre experienced a tremendous guest response to the feature ‘Lee Daniels’ The Butler’ such that additional showtimes were added to meet our guests demands.
At no time last night did local management receive any guest complaints or concerns about our security or staff, who worked diligently to meet all of our guests needs.
To the extent any guests were disappointed with their experience, we welcome the opportunity to address their concerns and provide them the best entertainment experience possible in their future visits to our theatres.
Flowers later took to Twitter after speaking with a Regal Movies’ manager.
