RENTAL AFFORDABILITY THROUGH THE FLOOR

The Real Estate Institute of Australia’s Quarterly Market Facts today reveals that rents for three bedroom houses have increased 2.4% over the last quarter, making Canberra one of the most unaffordable places to rent in Australia.
“Labor’s mismanagement of the housing affordability crisis means that Canberrans now have to put even more money aside to pay for increasing rents,” ACT Liberal Senator Gary Humphries said today.
“This is on top of rising cost of living expenses.
“People who rent accommodation in Canberra have been taken for granted by an out of touch government who thinks we should be ‘grateful’ and that we should ‘stop complaining’ because there is no problem.
“While young families desperately save for a deposit or look for rental housing there, some Canberrans are now forced to choose between being homeless or living in a slum.
“After the ACT has missed out on infrastructure spending, tourism funding, had housing affordability funding torn away and been signed up to lose 50% of our GST revenue, how can you trust a government that can’t deliver and can’t stand up for Canberra?
“Only under a Liberal government will Canberrans see real action on rental affordability and the cost of living,” Senator Humphries concluded.
